Can you help me make our master bedroom look less tired for house sale??

we are due to list our house in 4 weeks time but I am feeling despairing about our master bedroom. To be honest it’s the room which sold us the house (it has a bay window and a second window so it is really light) and I think it looks ok in the agents’ photo (first pic attached)……but while we have complete redone every other room, this one kind of got left of the list and now it just depresses me and I think it looks bad. I don’t have much time or budget to improve it now alas but I feel like I need it to be much nicer before we let people in!!

what would you do (any ideas for colours/ patterns etc welcome!)?

  • threadbare carpet with underlay near the door worn through
  • cat scratched armchair
  • bedframe which is meant to be intentionally ‘distressed’ but since we painted the room white just looks dirty
  • curtains I bought in a hurry from Dunelm but now I just think are too dark for the room and not sure about the pattern
  • Paint peeling off radiator

I’m lacking vision 😬

Bin the armchair for starters!

CraftyNavySeal · 12/08/2024 20:07

Hang the curtains properly. Throw over chair. Clean and touch up skirting boards. Plain duvet cover. Put anything moveable in a cupboard.

Apart from that I would leave as is. If buying I would rather see what work I will need to do instead of it being covered up.

Angharad78 · 12/08/2024 20:07

Definitely fix the curtains so they hang properly then spend a little bit to get a duvet and throw to cover chair with a couple of cushions to bring it all together?

WindowFrogs · 12/08/2024 20:07

I would tidy up, get rid of the armchair and stick a tall houseplant like an indoor palm tree in a nice pot in front of the scratched skirting board. Drape a throw over the end of the bed or put a new velvet ottoman at the end of it with cushions on to distract from the paint. It's a lovely room, it does look nice and light.

userhelp · 12/08/2024 20:09

It just needs a good tidy and clean,

dress the bed with plain bedding, throws, pillows (can be done cheap just look online for pictures for ideas

Position furniture the side by window looks dumped/odd

Chair, drape throw over side and pillow on

Move lamp so wire not dragging across room

Radiator get some rad spray paint from b&m only about £5

Floralnomad · 12/08/2024 20:10

Does the other window have curtains ?

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 12/08/2024 20:11

Can you move the small bedside table drawers and laundry basket that are in the middle of the first picture? I think they look slightly odd where they are.

But that might be more of an issue for the online photos than for people looking round.

TattoedLady · 12/08/2024 20:13

Echo posters above...white duvet cover & some throw pillows, throw over the chair. Touch up obvious marks on the skirting boards (only if you know the exact paint colour). But I would also suggest new curtains...they're just a bit of a meh length (sorry!), even inexpensive IKEA will go the floor and show off the bay window better.

moodymary · 12/08/2024 20:13

I would move the three drawer chest out altogether and get rid of the chair. Re-paint the bed frame, use plain bed linen and dress the bed with a throw that matches the curtains. Re-hang the curtains and repaint the skirting boards.

MichaelAndEagle · 12/08/2024 20:13

Tidy it up as others have suggested but don't spend much. It is a lovely sized room, nice and bright. Its a nice room.

Osco · 12/08/2024 20:16

Hang curtains properly and consider turning them up as wrong length for window. Matching curtains needed for 2nd window or just get cheap plain matching curtains for both windows.

Plain duvet for bed and add throw, few cushions. Iron everything well so it looks immaculate.

Get rid of chair, small chest of drawers and laundry basket.

Touch up paint on skirting. Not sure what can be done with carpet.

Tapandsink · 12/08/2024 20:19

Just get rid of the little chest of drawers, lamp, laundry bin and chair for the sake of viewings. They're visual clutter and not adding anything. Agree with pps that longer curtains would help.

Edited

Agree.

mathanxiety · 12/08/2024 20:20

Get the carpet cleaned. Buyers will probably rip out the carpets anyway.

Drape a white throw over the armchair. It's not for sale with the house.

Pin up the curtains (they're not bad).

Paint the radiator.

Bedframe is fine.

Hide the wicker basket that's visible in the photo.

Shut the built-in closet door properly.

mathanxiety · 12/08/2024 20:21

And paint the skirting boards.

Tupster · 12/08/2024 20:25

I think the teal colour of the curtains is really nice against the white. I'd take that as a theme and run with it. As others have said, hang them properly, make sure that both windows have the same curtains. Clean, clean, clean to the extent of renting a carpet cleaner for the day and then cover up the worst of the carpet with some rugs in the same sort of accent palette as the curtains. Get rid of the chair if you can. Touch up the skirting boards and other paintwork where needed. Get a radiator cover - something like the Lynton from Dunelm and put some nice ornaments on the top. Make sure your bedding matches/echos the curtains, and jobs a good-un.

blueberrycherubandbump · 12/08/2024 20:26

Add a couple of BIG leafy house plants in nice pots. They're often given away on Facebook. Will tie in with the curtains

Remove these altogether for photos and viewings.
Plain bedding. And dress the bed.
No ottoman - don't add more furniture!
Houseplant good idea.
Yes to sorting curtains

BettyBardMacDonald · 12/08/2024 20:29

Get a sage green duvet and curtains. Remove the chair and other small pieces.

What's under the carpet?

Can the bed be oriented to face the cupboards?

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 12/08/2024 20:32

Im amazed no one is clamouring to reeducate the OP on her use of the phrase ‘master bedroom’.

NorthernMusician · 12/08/2024 20:35

It's a lovely room.

You can get nice second-hand curtains cheaply off ebay or vinted. Likewise an cheap rug and throw in toning colours. That will improve the look of the floor and the chair.
Be careful what you buy, though, as curtains, rug and throw have to look like they belong together even if they don't quite match, and also tone with the duvet. A plain duvet cover might make that easier.

Pigeonqueen · 12/08/2024 20:38

Bin the armchair.

Get matching sets of curtains - hang them properly; get cheap eyelet ones if you are on a low budget, even Asda ones are better than having one window bare and one set hanging badly.

Izzynohopanda · 12/08/2024 20:41

As others have said

  • bin the chair or put nice throw over it, and cushions
  • touch up skirting boards and paintwork
  • hang curtains properly
  • re-arrange the furniture. The linen basket and little drawers seem randomly placed.
  • get rid of junk by radiators, puvk up stuff from under the bed
  • get nice duvet cover , ironed not creased, make bed properly.
