Recommended man and van removals

Hi there,

Looking for recommendations of smaller removals companies, long distance, from Wales to South Yorkshire - just a few items of furniture and about 40 boxes. Anyone used a man and van type company they can recommend?

I've had stupid quotes from £121 up to £600 odd... from Shiply, then the more general major house removals firms quoting me £1700! I need one that is going to be reliable in so much as it turns up.

Thanks in advance!

I think £121 sounds pretty reasonable. That would be a full days work (4 or 5 hours each way) for someone to get there and back plus petrol money. Minimum wage is £11.40

£121 is very cheap! 6 hour drive with stops. That's only £20 per hour, one way and no fuel.

LaraThot · 11/08/2024 00:22

Nobody is doing that for £121. The PP mentioning minimum wage simply hasnt got a clue. If you want a proper company with proper insurances etc then hire a proper removal firm not some twat with a Luton van.

Geneticsbunny · 11/08/2024 13:11

@LaraThot did you mean to be so rude? The OP has had a quote for £121 and said that that was expensive.

I was simply pointing out that she would be unlikely to get anything any cheaper than that and using minimum wage as a method to explain that.

I assume that qualified van drivers get paid more than that.

Maybe if you had read the original post properly you would have responded differently?

The £121 is too cheap! I want a company that's going to turn up and cheap doesn't always mean reliable. I don't mind spending more and most quotes I'm getting from all other man and van type companies are around the £500 mark. As I said, general removal companies, with insurances etc., are charging £1700 or more... we don't need a removals lorry or a bill of that size!

Ok
Apologies. I misunderstood. Although it wasn't all that clear from your post.

If it helps I have had very good experiences from using Shipley previously but they are all individual people so I assume it could be hit and miss. Mine have always turned up on time and been very helpful and professional. Unfortunately I don't have details for any of them.

If it helps, the daily rate we work on with our supplier at work, who move stuff around for us, is £500 per day (excl VAT).
You'd need 2 men, plus the cost of the van, plus fuel (say £150 once they've made a profit on that). You're probably venturing into over time too, and need to be aware of driver's hours.
Van would be maybe £100 per day - they may need to pay to park it somewhere during their breaks too.

£1700 doesn't sound that bad.

Be very careful, OP. We sell heavy items at work that sometimes people won't pay our delivery charges for so they source their own. The amount of times a young lad turns up with their jeans round their knees, a clipboard and a luton van with stuff thrown in the back of it.......I've had 2 recently that I refused to let take the items seeing how they were treating their other load.

Thanks all, we've chosen an external provider for £530 so all sorted now.
