Blinds v Curtains for bedroom?

We're doing redecorating and have a chance to change our dated looking bedroom curtains. Only I'm now wondering whether curtains are actually outdated and blinds might be better. What is the current thing and what's modern? to give some context, we have 2 large bedroom windows, the bed head is against one just beneath one window and on the other window has a radiator beneath it, so we currently have short curtains on both. Are curtains still seen as a must have for the bedroom? if not what kind of blinds would you recommend i.e roller/roman.

I would only ever have blinds in a study or kitchen. Only curtains look cosy and un-officey.

But then there's nothing modern about me or my taste so I have no idea what the "current thing" is!

DC have blackout blinds but just plain ones with curtains over the top.

Swirlymist · 07/08/2024 12:31

Agree with previous poster, always curtains, unless you like the living in an office look.

maplemaplesyrup · 07/08/2024 17:10

What about shutters instead?

Ilovemyshed · 07/08/2024 17:12

Blinds look cold in my opinion. Blinds AND curtains can work, or just curtains, and only full length curtains.

What about blackout Roman blinds fitted in the recesses and faux long curtains to dress the sides.

Reallybadidea · 07/08/2024 18:20

I hate the way Roman blinds block off the top of the window. Short curtains tend to be thought of as rather naff. We have a radiator under our bedroom window and so have a blackout roller blind within the recess which is more or less invisible when rolled up but means we can leave the curtains open if we want to heat the room. The blackout blind is also handy for keeping the room a bit warmer in winter and we close it in the afternoons if there's a heat wave.

Great comments, thanks.
So what i'm getting is curtains are the way to go probably coupled with blinds. I forgot to mention that currently have curtains as well as blinds in the recess of both windows but was hoping to lose the curtains altogether but won't now.

I was actually thinking of maybe Roman blinds instead but not so sure now..

@Ilovemyshed What are 'faux' long curtains?

@Reallybadidea What length of curtains do you have cos your setup sounds similar to mine? I agree short curtains do look a bit naff.

Also the second window is right where the bed's head which means we definitely cannot have long curtains there but it will look weird having long curtains on one window and short on the other one so not still not sure which way to go i.e lose the curtains altogether or will have to stick with 2 sets of short curtains.

Full-length curtains are modern, short ones (cut around radiator height) - dated.

LadeOde · 07/08/2024 22:35

@Chypre so do you think i should have :
window 1 above radiator - Long curtains
Window 2 with bed head against it - long curtains but that will mean hidden behind bed and difficulty opening and closing them unless bed is moved each time (not going to happen as super kingsize bed!)

Really appreciate all these comments.

OP posts:
Chypre · 07/08/2024 22:41

@LadeOde how about window 2 - long curtains always open (for the looks and proportions) and blackout blind underneath for functionality?

Jemimapuddleduk · 07/08/2024 22:42

Both! We have black out blinds and curtains in the bedroom.

Reallybadidea · 07/08/2024 22:42

Sorry, I meant to say that we have long curtains along with the blackout blind.

I would probably go for long curtains and then a matching Roman blind on the window above your bed.

LadeOde · 07/08/2024 22:43

@Chypre That actually sounds like a brilliant idea!

LadeOde · 07/08/2024 22:45

@Reallybadidea You mean window 1 with long curtains and then window 2 with just a Roman blind....ohh that sounds a bit odd Grin

We have roller blinds and voiles in our bedrooms rather than curtains. We only have curtains in downstairs living areas. I just find curtains a bit heavy in a bedroom.
And we never close any of them anyway

Lalalaletmeexplain · 07/08/2024 22:50

I’m going to go against the conensus on the thread and say definitely not curtains!! It sounds like long curtains won’t really work given the position of the bed and radiator. Short curtains are a definite no. I think blinds and curtains would be too fussy. Roman blinds would be perfect! I’ve recently moved house and have Romans in most bedrooms as the radiators are below the windows. I love them. I quite like a minimal, uncluttered vibe so they fit with that.

LadeOde · 07/08/2024 22:50

@Willyoushutthefrontdoor Voile curtains bring back memories and i love them - light fluffy curtains and especially when freshly washed but they seem out of date? Hardly anyone i know has them BUT if they are not out of date pls correct because that will be a great solution to have blackout roller blinds in the recess then voile curtains on top.

points taken on board. Do you think you could post a photo of your window pls? if you don't want to that's fine, it's just it'd be nice to see as that's the idea i first started out with.

TheSmallAssassin · 07/08/2024 22:53

Does it matter if things are "out of date"? Nobody really sees my bedroom except family, so I'm all for going for whatever you like or is practical. I don't have a problem with curtains that fall just under the window sill, but our windows are relatively big, so I don't want to spend more on curtains/fabric than I have to!

Sorrryyyyy!! Yes, let me see if I can find a pic. Kids currently asleep within the rooms in question! 😂

LadeOde · 07/08/2024 23:06

@TheSmallAssassin I agree but the room is quite out of date (13yrs out!) and we're repainting it & always hated the short curtains even though they are practical and feel now's a good time to update and give a completely fresh look & feel ifyswim.

Blinds in a bedroom look cheap. Curtains are so much cosier.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 07/08/2024 23:14

I have both, but I don't sleep well with light.

Dont think anything is out of date if someone likes them. I just prefer them for the lighter look in a bedroom. Never used. Never closed. Just for window dressing. Just shows how different everyone is because id never buy short curtains 🤣
my daughter has these with a pink flower wall And flamingos! Pics from when I was decorating

Blinds v Curtains for bedroom?
Ginmonkeyagain · 08/08/2024 08:44

We have a blind in our spare bedroom (really used as an office) and backout blind plus curtains in our bedroom as I am a poor sleeper.

Oir curtains end just below the windowsill as, like many older places that had gas central heating installed in the 70s, our radiator is under the window.

I obviously need to report myself to the fashion police over my shamefully short curtains!

muddyford · 08/08/2024 08:55

I have a Roman blind on the window in the wall where my bedhead is and curtains on the other.
