IKEA kitchen cabinet as bathroom vanity

Has anyone done this? Is there likely to be an issue with moisture levels and if so is there any way to treat the mdf to protect it?

Bathroom vanity units seem to cost an absolute fortune in the size I’m looking for. I keep seeing people upcycling proper wood furniture which must cost less but seems like more hassle than I have bandwidth for at the moment.

We've got a kitchen corner wall cabinet as the bathroom cabinet, holds tons of stuff and looks great. It's been up about 15 years I think and good as new. This sort of thing -

We used Ikea Bodbin kitchen base units in our en suite. Been in for 8 years and still look brand new. Masses of storage and stood the test of time really well.

Kitchen units are generally deeper than those for bathrooms. This can cause problems if you need to reach over them to get to a standard size wall cabinet . There will be a lot more space around the basin, which can be a good thing depending on how you wish to use it.

The construction is pretty similar, unless you have very long hot showers which create gallons of condensation I can’t see that they would not stand up to the situation.

I've got one in my ensuite, been there about 14 years without any problems. Builder cut the back to fit over slanted stairwell. Piece of their kitchen worktop on it with a bowl sink, still looks like new and holds towels, loo rolls, cleaning stuff as well as toiletries, very happy with it.

Thank you! These replies are really helpful.

We won’t have a wall cabinet above it, just a mirror, and I’d really like plenty of space around the sink. It seems will work well and is so much cheaper so I was sure there would be a catch somewhere!
