Hello! Hope you don't mind me asking your opinions. My son is a FTB and has seen a flat in Hadfield that he loves. We know Glossop well (as in, I've commuted through there for years) and we very much know about the hellish traffic.

Would Hadfield be a nice place for a 20-something? He's looking for somewhere affordable, safe and good transport links into Manchester. We have visited at rush hour (nightmare) and on weekends (slow and lazy). The neighbours are lovely. Is there anything else about the area to consider?

Thank you very much.

I’m local to there and wouldn’t live there because of the commuting issues. I would look at Uppermill, Delph, Mossley, Denshaw, or if he has the budget, Dobcross. All of them have the same vibe he’s after but better transport links to Manchester (close to the motorway and good train lines) and not the hellish transport issues.

Thanks for this, and for suggesting different areas. I've just searched those villages and there is nothing in his price range (which is about 2p Smile) at all. It's a really tough call as to whether to encourage him to stay at home, save more, get better job or to encourage him to take the leap. The property market is insanely stressful.

Luckily DS works nights so will not be as affected with the traffic...for now.

What about Stalybridge? 15 mins on a direct train to Manchester and property is cheaper. It’s not as pretty, but it’s still surrounded by countryside and there are some nice cafes and restaurants starting to appear.

If we forgot entirely about the traffic, is Hadfield a nice area to live in?

What’s his budget? Will he be commuting by car or train? The train is pretty good. It’s not as reliable as it was pre pandemic but still a decent connection to Manchester. Hadfield is end of the line though, so it takes ages. Hadfield is ok but I prefer Glossop. If getting the train, dinting or broadbottom are quicker again. As a 20 ish year old I’d prefer Glossop to Hadfield as it has more going on. Does he have any hobbies? There’s great running and biking to be had.

Thanks for replying. DS goes to the gym most days and has a girlfriend living In Birmingham. He does like his own company but I do worry about him being isolated. Our budget is under 140k so there are no Glossop properties (bar the ones in the Mill which have a billion-pound service charge). The flat we have seen is so bright and airy, and the other owner-occupier is absolutely lovely.

It feels like such a big decision.

Hadfield is fine. It feels a bit run down compared to glossop but it's safe and there are a lot of families there. You will definitely get more for your money in hadfield/hollingworth/tintwistle. There's a good fish and chip shop and dentist (which is why I visit there).

Oh that's great to hear. Thank you. I just want him to be safe...

Much appreciated

Yep definitely safe. I looked at rental properties there when I moved back to the UK, had no qualms about living there as a single woman but ended up in a nearby area instead as I found a nice house that suited me better.

I’ve just had a quick look on Rightmove- put Saddleworth and within 1 mile. There were a few in Newhey, Springhead and Mossley within your price range. Ignore anything in Oldham or Lees.
