Connecting a washing machine

We've just bought our first house and I'm very excited to buy a brand new washing machine.

Has anyone connected one yourself and is it easy enough?

I begrudge paying £30 when it does look fairly simple.

Yes it's easy enough

CornishTiger · 03/08/2024 21:01

Super simple as long you have the right fittings. Have a you tube. :)

So so amazingly simple if the plumbing is in situ. Just screw the hose on, generally only cold feed these days. YouTube it.

It's very simple if everything is in place.

For thirty quid and having not done it before, I'd make it somebody else's problem, though.

I'm sure there will be videos on You Tube, I've done it myself - but not for 40 years

I connected my new one this week. The instructions will show if you need to unscrew anything first. My machine had 4 screws holding the drum still in transit. It came with a hose. Screw one end on to the cold water supply in your washing machine sized space, then turn the valve on. This should be really obvious when you actually look at it. Hand tighten only, no tools needed for this bit. Then screw the other end to the water feed on the back of the machine. Again, the instruction book will show where that is. Tuck the drainage hose from the back of your machine into the drainage pipe in your room - it just drops down the pipe. No connecting anything. Plug machine in, shift in to place and that's it. It took less time to do than it did to type this. It really is clear and easy when you see the machine and the space!

You will need the right tools to remove the transit bolts. We also had to remove a cap from the water pipe as the previous owner had been using the other one and not that one.

We tried to DIY after accidentally forgetting to order installation, the pipe was a bit awkward and we ended up calling a plumber friend to do it. DH is normally good at these things but he just couldn’t make it cooperate.

I’d rather have just paid the £30 for an easy life!

DH finds it very easy and will always do it himself whereas when the washing machine broke and I had to get a new one when he was away once I opted to pay for fitting as washing machines are quite heavy to lug into position and stuff like that.

If it's a direct replacement for an existing washing machine, it's pretty straightforward.

Cold water in, waste water out, plug it in.

Don’t forget to remove the transit bolts!!
