We're buying a cottage which doesn't have the layout we need upstairs (ideally need 3 double bedrooms). It looks like it was originally 2 doubles and the end single (it can fit a double bed). The only option I can see is to take out the partition wall between the middle two bedrooms, but that'll give two huge bedrooms and one single - can anyone see any other option? I think the chimney stops anything being done with that wall.

If you already have an office then in my suggestion I'd use the small room as a reading nook or craft room - some sort of hobby space.

I feel that it would've been better even if the partition was put up as one straight wall - I can't understand the reasoning for the weird entrance to the 3rd bedroom from left - it's a waste of space.

Why have they done that?

If you can't lose the fireplace, or swap the bathroom around, the only option seems to be changing the wonky wall to a straight one. But that only gains you a foot in the smaller room. That would only be worth the hassle if an easily moveable partition wall.

I really like @HoHoHoliday suggestion. If you do not want or need that 3rd smaller room, you can leave it open, creating a gorgeous landing space where you can put sitting, bookshelves, etc. It has a window so would be a lovely shared space. I love big landings and random dens in a house.
