It looks like the enamel has worn off the toilet exposing the porous material underneath that's harbouring gunk.

Toilets aren’t expensive, why can’t he just replace it?

Missguidedsmiles · 02/08/2024 17:15

@Anewuser because he's a stingy bast..

When I was buying a new toilet the guy on the showroom was say to make sure the enamel goes faarrrr down the waste pipe bit because if the porous parts come into contact with any dirty water the toilet will smell.

Missguidedsmiles · 02/08/2024 17:38

@GreatScruff thankyou muchly, do you know how to get rid of it?x

Are you in the UK?

Toilets are made of ceramic so perhaps the glaze (not enamel) has chipped off and exposed the ceramic underneath. But how would that happen, if that's under the rim of the toilet bowl? I also don't know why it would be pock-marked with small holes - that looks like something that would happen in the manufacturing process.

Is the brown something on top of the surface or has that worn away and exposed the layer underneath?

Missguidedsmiles · 02/08/2024 18:07

@SmiteTheeWithThunderbolts I moved in almost a year ago, i know this house was made in 2015 but I don't know the previous tenants. I am in the UK yes, it looks like a thick clay substance and probably would come away with a chisel but I'm too scared to crack the toilet bowel.

Built up dirt and limescale I moved into a house a few years ago it wasn’t that bad but not far off. You need a good scrubbing brush and elbow grease on it. Then keep up with it, bleach and scrub under the rim every day, it takes a minute once a day.

OneForTheToad · 02/08/2024 20:36

You need a proper limescale removal fluid, like you’d put in a kettle, like Durgol. Don’t skimp and go cheap. You can also apply it via a spray gun. It takes a while for it to work, and use a hard plastic implement to prise it off. If you put you hand down in the pan and feel ‘round the bend’ you might have a huge build up of lime scale there also.

Emily1583 · 02/08/2024 20:43

Might need to get a pumice stone to chisel away at the main build up. Then a few rounds of Harpic black and hopefully it'll come up good.

Whataretalkingabout · 02/08/2024 21:08

If it is on the inside under the rim you could use hydrochloric acid diluted in 4 parts water. Wear a mask longsleeves and gloves. Leave it an hour then brush away and flush . All gone. This is what my plumber does on limescale. Yours looks the same.

Diyextension · 03/08/2024 15:16

Yeah thats built up limescale. Its not your landlords job to keep the toilet clean as others have said you need a serious limescale remover and the best tool to scrap in off with is a plastic hard one that wont mark/ scratch the enamel.

Hoppinggreen · 03/08/2024 17:01

I think its limescale that has discoloured.
Bleach wont work, you need to get the limescale off. Use a specialist cleaner but they are nasty so be careful and then regulalry use something that will prevent it building back up

seethingmess · 03/08/2024 17:49

I think it looks like the enamel doesn't properly cover the clay all the way under the rim. So it was made wrong and isn't sealed there.
