Absolute novice here, if you had these floorboards underneath a thick brown carpet in the lounge, would you pull the carpet up or keep it down?

Your timber doesn't look of great quality and the cost to sand and polish properly won't be that much cheaper than laying new engineered wood. Bonus is greater sound and weather insulation.
