Does anyone have a 2-in-1 sink/toilet combination

This kind of thing. We have a ridiculously narrow downstairs toilet and want to refurbish it. We were thinking of one of these to save space. I've just had a plumber round to quote and he has said not to have one as "they don't work". He said he's put a few in, and within a year he's had to go back and take them out again.

I've read some reviews online, which don't seem negative, but also, they aren't from people who have had them installed for a long time.

So, has anyone here got one, and can offer an opinion. If so, which type do you have, because another plumber I had round for a quote, when I showed him a photograph of what I wanted (not the specific model, just "this type of thing" said it would too difficult to fit because of "something technical that I didn't listen to".

Edit because picture didn't show.

My godparents have had one for about 8 years and they've never complained about it not working.

Didn’t have one myself, but used them in several places in France where they are quite common ( difficult to get hot water into the loo)

I found them quite awkward to use , you have to sort of reach over the loo to get to the water.

Better than nothing, I suppose.

Seems a practical solution in a small space. The only thing I would say is probably more cleaning as bound to have drips from hand washing, and yes more awkward to get close to the sink, particularly for little ones I would imagine.I wonder why the plumber doesn’t think it will work? Or is it that he just hasn’t fitted one before.

Maybe the reason the all fail for that plumber is because he doesn't fit them properly?

You can get a tiny sink the size of two bags of sugar, would that not do?

HurdyGurdy19 · 30/07/2024 21:37

Thank you. He said he has fitted a few of them, but just doesn't rate them.

We've no small children to consider, and my thinking is that it's an occasional use room, and not getting heavy use.

I'll look into maybe just getting a smaller sink, but anything sticking out into the room really makes it awkward as it will need to be placed opposite the radiator, which is also sticking out.

Is there room to recess the basin into the wall slightly? I see you can get ones that are 210mm deep. Not ideal, I know.

Might be ok if there is space next to the toilet to stand, like in the picture.
Not so much, if the only way to reach the sink is to straddle the toilet!
I would consider other options - is there a stud wall and if so could you extend into an adjacent room to accommodate a small sink?

Fiftiesishard · 01/08/2024 18:05

What is the actual width of your toilet OP? I agree that they're a bit awkward and would prefer to squeeze a sink in if there is any chance. Our previous loo was 70cm wide at most, about 1.5m long so we had a tiny sink opposite (the door was in the middle). You can also get small triangular ones for corners which don't take up much room either.

we have the "duo" model from Bathshack. It's been installed for about a year with no problems. It is used as a downstairs occasional use loo and is ideal for that purpose. Visitors are intrigued by it. Unless you have small kids it presents no practical problems in terms of using the sink; the toilet isn't big enough to feel like you are leaning over an obstruction. I changed the tap, flush button and waste that it comes with for a different colour that fits my scheme. If you are short on space it's a good solution

HurdyGurdy19 · 02/08/2024 10:33

Oooh, I like that narrow sink. I don't think there's room to recess it, but I have a plumber here today fitting some outside taps, so I can ask what he thinks.

Thank you.

(Plumber is in the downstairs loo now, so I can't get in to measure. But it used to be the passageway between the house and garage, before the previous owners filled it in with the downstairs loo, so very narrow)

We had one in our last house, we were there for 5 years and never had any problems.

Due to how tiny the room was and where the door was, even a shallow sink was not an option, and I didn't want a loo without a sink.

To wash hands you'd sort of just stand next to the toilet. The water tank would use recycled water from the sink so saved a tiny bit of water too.
