£11k for a bathroom refit?

Happy to hear this is a reasonable price…
We are having our small bathroom refitted. New bath with shower over it, toilet, vanity unit, towel rail, tiles and floor. Some plastering needed and new lighting. We are changing the position of the bath which I guess costs money due to plumbing requirements.

The current bathroom is 20+ years old and grotty. We have a toddler and number 2 on the way so it desperately needs doing as it’s our only bathroom.

Anyway, the quote from Wickes is £11k. The cost of the products is £3.5k and the rest is fitting. This seems so high to me especially as we’ve not chosen high end products particularly. More mid range.

Just looking to see what people think as this is the first work we’ve had done and so don’t really have an idea about what is a reasonable price!

That's outrageous! Ask a few local plumbers to quote, we've just had a quote of £6K for ours, £7.5k labour costs for approximately 1 weeks work is madness.

Geneticsbunny · 27/07/2024 15:38

That seems reasonable to me. Renovations have gone up in price loads in the last few years. You might be able to knock a thousand pounds off if you shop around for a fitter but you will probably have to wait several months as good, cheap fitters are usually very booked up.

Geneticsbunny · 27/07/2024 15:39

Where abouts in the country are you because that will make a huge difference

VeryQuaintIrene · 27/07/2024 15:41

Did something similar in London last year and it was about 7K all told.

Geneticsbunny · 27/07/2024 15:41

Where abouts in the country are you because that will make a huge difference.

Don't forget that it will also include lots of building materials like grout, timber, plaster and plaster board that have gone up a lot in price. And skips are £200 quid off nowadays too.

ClaraLaraBow · 27/07/2024 15:44

I was told 11 to 14 thousan euro.
Again, small bathroom.
We're in the wrong business

KnittedCardi · 27/07/2024 15:45

The big companies are always more expensive. As pp, look for a well regarded local plumber. We got a bathroom (bath and walk in shower), en-suite (shower), new boiler, new tanks, new pipes etc, wall knocked down, top end fittings, double vanity units, half tiled, four week job, for £22k all in.

LightFull · 27/07/2024 15:47

I mean if the plumbing is staying in the sane place it's a lot

If they're moving it all around then I suppose it's ok ish

MaJoady · 27/07/2024 15:48

In the Midlands, we've had labour quotes ranging from 2.5k to 5k. For ripping out and replacing with no layout changes in a small bathroom: loo, vanity unit, shower over bath. But also changing radiator for towel rail.

Summertimer · 27/07/2024 15:50

Around 18 months ago we had new shower cubicle and bar taps and aqua board, new bath panels, new radiator, new extractor, new loo seat, some boxing in, re sealing, grout clean, walls and skirtings painted. This cost just short of 6k. So if you are having new bath, sink, loo, tiling in addition to most of above then the price is reasonable

ForPearlViper · 27/07/2024 15:56

It is a very expensive quote. But, not for that reason, I beg you not to use Wickes or any other major firm for any renovations. They use third party fitters with no effective quality control and if you have problems it might take years to sort out. I've heard so many horror stories.

For any work you want done use word of mouth. Ask around family, friends, neighbours and work colleagues. In each area there will be a few tradespeople 'everyone uses' and there's generally a very good reason. They are usually so busy they don't advertise anywhere and you might have to wait a bit longer for the job but it will be worth it.

whatthejuice · 27/07/2024 16:18

It's on the higher end. I paid £4k for a refit recently but he was an apprentice who wanted the work for his experience. Luckily it paid off but most quotes I got were closer to £8k-£10k

LindaDawn · 27/07/2024 16:20

Our bathroom refit by a local company cost £10k almost 4 years ago. We did not have to move the position off anything. Tiles were Porcelanosa but everything else was mid range. No bath just a shower. This doesn’t include the flooring which was LVT and done separately.

Anjo2011 · 27/07/2024 16:23

Ours was 14k and was totally finished at the end. We had bath, shower, loo, vanity unit, heated towel rail. Included electrics, LVT floor, plastering, skip, decorating, tiling. This was March/April this year.

CTW23 · 27/07/2024 16:38

Ours was high end. 13k for everything, tiling and painting too

Movinghouseatlast · 27/07/2024 16:41

Ours was 10k 4 years ago. Bath, basin, toilet, tiling, plumbing.

unsync · 27/07/2024 17:08

Large bathroom, complete strip out back to brick etc, high end fittings approx 16K bath, walk in shower, loo and basin. Don't forget VAT automatically adds 20% to cost. Six month lead time. Absolutely worth every penny.

VivaLaSpag · 27/07/2024 17:16

We refurbished our small bathroom a couple of years ago-local builder-took everything back to brick and also moved a stud wall to make some extra space. Fittings were good quality but not high end. Didn’t have change from £12k-within the M25

LostittoBostik · 27/07/2024 17:18

Literally half what it cost to refit our (admittedly quite large) bathroom in London last year. Higher end products than wickes but only mid range (and actually i haven't been happy with the quality either 😵‍💫)

Lowerechelons · 27/07/2024 17:19

I think it's at the higher end of reasonable, but it's not entirely shocking

LostittoBostik · 27/07/2024 17:19

Should add that also involved moving plumbing, replacement of old lead pipes, moving electrics etc

Roselilly36 · 27/07/2024 17:23

Reasonable price, paid £7.5k 21 years ago, when we replaced our family bathroom.

Roselilly36 · 27/07/2024 17:25

@waryandbored the labour is always more expensive if you are choosing low/mid range. Wickes need to guarantee the works, I am assuming they sub contract fitter, sparky, plasterer etc.

Appledrop · 27/07/2024 17:38

LLast year, we renovated our bathroom. We replaced the bathtub with a spacious shower since there wasn't enough space for both. To accommodate two sinks, we extended part of the room to align with the door. Additionally, we installed a built-in shelf in the shower, replaced the radiator with a heated towel rail radiator, repositioned the toilet and shower, fitted cabinets with worktops, installed a mirror and wall cabinet with power outlets for toothbrushes, and also had floor and wall tiles fitted. The cost came to almost £13,000. We purchased the bathroom fittings from Leekes. I believe the fitting cost around £6k-£7k. We live in South Wales.

frenchfancy81 · 27/07/2024 17:44

Ours was £14 last year!
