Stairs up to loft

The loft in my house is semi-converted, done by the previous owners. When I bought the house 10 years ago, it had planning to put in dormer windows and create another bedroom, alongside a 2 storey extension, but I've never done this and it's now lapsed.

The room, as it is, is a brilliant storage space. Full had height, all boarded out, velux windows, lighting and power. Access is a pull down ladder on the landing, which has been fine, but my mobility isn't what it was and, as much as I can get up the ladder, I really struggle dropping back down it again!

I'd like to put a space saving staircase up there from my bedroom. Don't want or need it to be an additional bedroom; just more accessible storage space.

Do I need planning permission to do this? It would mean relocating the loft hatch about 6ft and installing a staircase. This is all work that a family member could do easily, but I don't want to render the house unsellable by not getting the right permission/approval.

Has anyone done this and can advise?

Thanks :)

Can you not install a staircase above the existing one, installing a staircase in your bedroom may devalue your house.
In any event it will be Building Control you need to contact to ensure it is safe and meets regulations (which it might not) etc.

(They won't care of you devalue your home!)

I put a space saver ladder into my loft. Didn't ask anyone, no regulations etc. it's just a chunky ladder with big space saving steps. My loft is not a habitable space so I didn't see why I should need permission. It might cause me problems when I sell, or it might not. It's great for me now, though.

There's no space on the landing to install a staircase unfortunately otherwise I would. There's actually enough room in my bedroom to have a narrow staircase and then build a partition wall so there's a door into the actual bedroom bit, so would consider that.
