Anyone ever fitted a bathroom tap?

For the sink... also for the bathtub. I'm assuming sink is easier?

Has anyone got any comments on how tricky it is for a novice? I've Googled and the internet seems to suggest it's very doable, but wanted a response from some real people on here to see if that's the reality!

It's theoretically very doable. Access can be an issue though and this can make it awkward.

It's better if there is already an isolation valve on the pipework as it's then easy to turn the water off quickly if it leaks where you've put the tap on!

basically, it isn't a complicated job if you have the right tools but it can be fiddly.

Thanks.. have you done it yourself? Did it require a lot of specialist tools? To have someone come out would be £100+, which seems silly for just a tap! But obviously if the tools are pricey that does change things...

Theoretically it is simple and, if you have clear access to the pipework, easy. Make sure that you have the correct tools to hand and, as previous poster said, you should be able to access the isolation valve.
However, you may find that the pipework is tricky to access then the job becomes more of a hassle.

Sorry, forgot to say, tools aren't pricy. You need some spanners and may need a screwdriver for the isolation valve.

Not bathroom but we did our kitchen mixer tap during lockdown

Have a look on YouTube, there might well be a video, we found one for our job

when you say fitting a tap, do you mean replacing one or installing a new one?
The former is relatively easy, dependent on access. The latter requires connecting the tap with new pipe-work to the existing supply and is probably beyond most DIYers.

HelloOhHell · 26/07/2024 10:02

100% doable! I got an adjustable spanner on Amazon for 6 quid. Already had a screwdriver for the isolation valve. There was no isolation valve on one of the other sinks so the hardest part was locating the stopcock, then closing it as it was
was hard to turn.

Let us know how it goes. Good luck!!

@Ifailed replacing...

You are all giving me much hope! I will give it a go I think and report back!

@hedgehoggle,
as you remove the old tap, take photos in case things go wrong and you have to put it back. Don't reply on the plug stopping things going down the drain, put a cloth down as well.

Tupster · 26/07/2024 13:53

I've done both. As you say, sink usually dead easy - especially if you have isolation valves and flexible fittings. It's really just an unscrew and screw back on job.
Bath taps can be completely impossible, depending on age and accessibility. Very often baths taps are screwed to the bath before the bath is fully fitted and they can just end up too close to the wall to be able to get tools in and turn them. You are much more likely to need special tap spanners that will allow you to get to the bolts from underneath. Also, if it's a super-old enamel bath, the taps can sometimes be cemented in. Dire warnings said, I did change the bath taps on my enamel bath a couple of years ago and it went fine, so it's always worth trying.

Yes! I have - I bought a special wrench so I could tighten the nuts properly

Wasn't a difficult job at all just a bit awkward as I have an inbuilt cupboard.

BurntBroccoli · 26/07/2024 21:00

Oh there were isolation valves on both hot and cold on mine which were also slightly awkward to shut off due to location.
