Moving to Cheshire

Hi,
We're looking to move from Torquay to more North.

We've been doing some research and looks like Cheshire is a good place to live with kids. we don't know about this part of England (I'm not British) and my husband is from Torquay (South west of England).

I would like some opinions in what areas are better to buy a house in Cheshire considering good schools, things to do with family, broadband (we do work from home), transport ( we would like to be close to Manchester Airport), how clean the streets are in that particular neighbourhood. we would like to be in a area where people take pride of the surrounding( because you live in a cheap area doesn't means you don't have to clean and tide your rubbish or pick your dog poo off, if you know what I mean).

We like Warrington so far but we don't know any neighbourhood.

We're looking for a 3 to 4 bedrooms property with garden and drive in a budget of 250 approx. what place would you recommend?

I appreciate your time to this.

Thank you so much,

Laudys

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that budget wont go far in Cheshire.

SnakesAndArrows · 25/07/2024 13:08

You’d get something on the Wirral. It’s Merseyside, but a Cheshire postcode. Parts of it are very nice, and about 40 minutes to both Manchester and Liverpool airports.

sugarbyebye · 25/07/2024 13:17

I stand corrected! I've just had a look on rightmove and The Wirral looks like a bargain. I'm on the border of east Cheshire and my two bed terraced house with no parking and a tiny garden is £270k.

I just moved from Warrington. It doesn’t look too bad when viewed from an outsiders perspective but it’s not a great place to live. Services are being cut year on year and there have been lots of job cuts. The council is one that is potentially about to become bankrupt and the schools aren’t great in the areas where you would be able to buy a property for your budget.

Gymmum82 · 25/07/2024 14:40

You won’t get much in Warrington for that budget. In some of the less nice parts you might get a 3 bed house but in the more affluent bits you’d be looking at £400-500k plus for a house.
Cheshire is very expensive for the nicer areas

Thank you everybody.
We're considering St. Helens, Merseyside as we understand the postcode thing. The houses we've seen in Cheshire needs work doing or we're not sure about the area but in Helens we've seen new builds in our budget but we also aren't too sure about the areas.
I'll have a look into Wirral and keep looking...
Thank you guys,

Tbh any area with a budget of £250K won’t be a ‘nice’ area, or will have poor transport, jobs, schools etc. I’ve read lots of threads lately where people are relocating from the south with a very small budget and expect to find something in a good area. Cheap housing here is cheap for a reason, and people are shocked that in the better areas, properties are actually a similar price to much of the south.

South and West Wirral are decent, but there’s not much happening there. There are good links to Chester and Liverpool, and Manchester airport is 30-40 minutes on the motorway. There are nice beaches and countryside but it’s a bit boring. Central Warrington and St Helens are a bit of a dump. Some of the outlying villages are lovely but again, very pricey.

Thank you guys,

not St Helens….it’s pretty run down, non descript sort of town….that’s why houses are cheap

South Liverpool is lovely ….near to city….parks….promenade….village feel communities….but you would be looking at around 400k for something like you want

Our four bed in south Liverpool was £800k. Three beds are going for up to £650k+. Prices round here are going crazy.

OP, whilst your money wouldn't go far at all in North Cheshire (the glamorous part) you could get something in less exciting, but perfectly nice south Cheshire. Both the below are on for 260k, but you could probably negotiate down to 250k.

This house is on a nice estate in Nantwich..it's pretty small but is 3 bed

This one again is nice enough in Sandbach - leasehold which isn't ideal, but not tiny.

Check out this 3 bedroom semi-detached house for sale on Rightmove

3 bedroom semi-detached house for sale in Flowerscroft, Nantwich, CW5 for £259,950. Marketed by Cheshire Lamont, Nantwich

I agree, this is good advice.

Rycbar · 25/07/2024 17:39

Macclesfield.
you’ll struggle for 4 bed but could get a 3 bed for that money in space places here. Airport 20/25 min drive and straight line to Manchester on the train!

MrsCarson · 25/07/2024 17:46

My son is in West Cheshire, you can find houses for your price there, just investigate the towns/villages well. He's on the edge of Winsford, people say it's not the nicest town but he's in a very nice neighbourhood.

Moll98 · 25/07/2024 17:55

I live in Cheshire. You'll struggle to get what you're looking for on that budget, even if you look in the less desirable areas of Cheshire. "North" doesn't always mean cheap. I think there is this idea down south you can have massive houses up north that are dirt cheap, and it really isn't necessarily true.

Jayinthetub · 25/07/2024 18:06

Sandbach, Nantwich, Middlewich, Alsager all have nice parts but I agree with pp, if you can find a 4 bed for £250, chances are the area isn't the best. Good luck!
