Council tax discount

Our house is sold and hopefully the sale is nearly at exchange. We're already divorced, and I am moving into a furnished rental in a couple of weeks with DD who is a full time student. Ex-H will remain in our house until the sale goes through. So I think we are both eligible for 25% council tax discount - him because he will remain in the house on his own and me because it'll just be me and student DD in the rental.

But I've got a feeling I've got this wrong - what do you think? Would I be considered to have a "second home", meaning no discount for either of us?

And I'm not sure all councils have the same rules either ...

Is your DD a uni student? Does she live away during term time?
I think students can only have an exemption at one address so uni house, or with you.

I would talk to your council as I’m not sure they do have the same rules, and they will be the best people to explain it to you anyway.

Only your local council will be able to answer this as every one has their own set of qualifying criteria for Council Tax reductions - really frustrating ( I know from personal experience) trying to work it out , particularly if you are moving into a new area.

thank you all I think on this occasion you’re right, MN isn’t going to give me the answer!
