Is the installation of a loft ladder very expensive?

I need to get a new loft ladder and will have to get a company in to install it as our DIY skills are seriously lacking. Does anyone know what kind of price I could be looking at?

We paid £1500 two years ago for the loft to be boarded and ladder installed. Took half a day, including moving the loft hatch over a bit.

I mean, I have one and it is literally 6 screws in the wood around the hatch to fix it in. Plus of course you need to figure out where it goes and when it is pushed up that it lands correctly on a beam (you don't want it smacking down onto the plasterboard or insulation).

Maybe watch a couple of videos on youtube ?

Cost us £1000 recently to board 3/4 of a huge loft and get a ladder. Ladders won't cost much on their own.

I paid £250 for mine, and that included fitting.

Thanks everyone. It seems like it would be affordable to have a ladder installed. Fortunately the loft is already boarded out.

It's only a few screws. If you're not confident to do it yourselves, do you not have a family member or friend that would do it, it's no more than a half hour job, including the obligatory cuppa!!

I expect the hardest part will be finding a trade person who'll do it. They're all so busy (around here anyway!!)

I’ve had similar situations where I needed professionals to handle things. A few years ago, I had a step ladder custom-made for my workspace, and the cost for installation was a bit more than I expected—around $200-$300.

It might be cheaper or more expensive depending on where you’re located. If you're in NZ, I also know some companies that use warehouse machinery and equipment to make the process smoother.

I paid about £200 for the actual ladder, and £180 for someone to fit it a few years ago. He had to make the opening in the ceiling bigger too though, so it took longer than just putting the ladder in.
