Mini fridge in bedroom safety

My oldest daughter is at uni and has just arranged to live with 4 others in a 3 storey house. She has chosen the top room which is going to be very hot. She says she won't care. Now she wants a mini fridge in there. The landlord has agreed to this as long as it's on some sort of base to protect the carpet.

My worry is that the fridge could be a fire risk in that hot bedroom, any thoughts?

She is getting all stroppy as usual and insisting on getting one anyway. Im worried for her safety in case of a fire and as her guarantor I am also worried a very expensive bill if there was a fire. She did say that if there was a fire that they would all be responsible for paying. She's almost 21 but can be immature.

What's the difference between a fridge in a hot bedroom and a fridge in a hot kitchen? And surely the landlord has buildings insurance and the students will have contents insurance?

I wouldn't be worried about this.

A mini fridge usually sits on a table top, not a carpet, it would need free flowing air around it, the instruction manual will give the safety precautions. If the landlord is OK with it he could ask the fire brigade to advise and check the whole property for smoke detectors, extinguishers, exits etc in case there ever was a fire for any reason.

What a strange thing to be worrying about. Leave the poor girl alone!

Assuming she's in the UK, it's not going to be THAT hot in the bedroom for most of the year. Certainly no hotter than a kitchen. Buy a reputable brand mini fridge rather than some random shite online and it'll be fine.

I wouldn't worry about it as a fire risk, it will make the room warmer though.

QforCucumber · 22/07/2024 10:05

Are you so dismissive of all of her decisions?
'she says she wants'
'stroppy as usual'
'can be immature'

what on earth is the problem with her having a fridge or having the top floor room?

KievLoverTwo · 22/07/2024 10:07

Do you mean an under counter fridge - one that sits on the floor? Just put some mdf down. A mini fridge sits on top of a counter or desk and only holds about 6-12 cans. The thing won’t set on fire but it may struggle to keep cold in a hot room.

Your DD is not responsible for fires, the LLs buildings insurance would cover that, so why is she under this impression?

Fridges are literally designed to be in the hottest room in the house. My kitchen is south facing and when the oven has been on, is really, really warm. My fridge has never caught fire.
My mum has an aga in her kitchen, and those things are hotter than hades. Her fridge has never caught fire either.

As long as she gets a reputable brand, and not just some shit off Temu, she'll be fine.

Peonies12 · 22/07/2024 10:22

I'd be more concerned about the energy bills, and checking her housemates are OK with that, if they're splitting bills. I can't see how it will be a fire risk.

SnapdragonToadflax · 22/07/2024 10:23

But she'll have contents insurance, yes? And the landlord has house insurance? Why would there be an expensive bill?

I would also be making sure there are multiple working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors throughout the house, but the actual fridge wouldn't worry me.

Mini fridges are really too small I got my DD a small 'proper' table top fridge, when she got fed up with people pinching her stuff out of the communal fridge.
