Kitchen extension ideas

Hi all, we just bought a house and are looking at ways to make the kitchen a bit bigger. Does anyone have any ideas for extending the kitchen? I've attached the floor plan. It's a small kitchen, but I have no idea how to work that out.

•What is to the right of what I assume is the outside wall?

•what is the room to the left? Do you need it, or could you extend the kitchen. Into it?
•what is to the bottom of the kitchen as you look at it on the plan? Can you do that way?
•what is the other side of what is the short outside wall at the top?

@KnickerlessParsons Yes, it is an exterior wall. Below the kitchen is the garage, which I plan to convert into a partial utility room. On the left are the living room and dining room (yes, we need the space for dining. From the top, it's a living room, the dining room, and then another small living space at the bottom.

What do you mean, what kind of exterior wall?

I didn't ask you what kind of exterior wall. I asked what was the other side of it because that seems the obvious direction to extend.

Madisonsha · 19/07/2024 16:12

@KnickerlessParsons That's the living room wall outside.

The obvious one to me (although a full diagram of the floor would be good!), is to swop the living area (if that's next to the kitchen as you said), and knock through the kitchen so you have a kitchen/diner. Reconfigure walls if necessary.

Then the living room is separate + the other small space you mention.

I could be missing something obvious as the floor plan doesn't show the full picture as it is currently.

@KnickerlessParsons That's the living room wall outside.

If it's an outside wall it can't also be the living room wall.
Can you show us the plan of the whole floor?

@KnickerlessParsons @halava here it is

@KnickerlessParsons @halava hope you understand better now. Sorry if my explanation wasn't clear.

Thank you.

So the obvious and simplest choice
Would be to move the back wall out to the same level as the lounge wall and/or extend into the garage.

Are you semi detached to the right of the kitchen and garage or do you have garden there that you could extend into in that direction?

Dilbertian · 20/07/2024 11:00

If you simply want a utility room plus more kitchen space (rather than an eat-in kitchen), the obvious thing to do is to divide the garage into thirds - front: storage, middle: utility, back: remove wall and extend kitchen into it - and also move the back wall of the kitchen to at least in line with the lounge wall. This would double the length of your kitchen.

This is assuming you can't extend to the side of the kitchen. Terraced/semi? Or lack of space to the side?

Madisonsha · 23/07/2024 15:09

@Dilbertian @KnickerlessParsons That's right! Semi-detached house with no space left on the side. I had the same thought to extend to the same wall lounge, but is it worth it? Gonna make the garage a partial utility. It's a medium-sized garden, and I'm afraid it would take up more space.

I think you misunderstand. Not just extend into the garden (I agree that wouldn't be worth while), but also into the garage.

I would swap the kitchen with the study area. You can keep it open plan or shut it off. Then use the existing kitchen as a study/snug. This would likely be cheaper and easier than extending.

I would keep it open personally and have a long run of tall cupboards along the left hand wall which would be great for extra storage and link the kitchen and dining rooms together. Then turn the dining table 90 degrees.

That's a much better Idea. Personally I don't like a long, narrow kitchen. Pepper's idea is far more homey and comfortable.

@KnickerlessParsons @Dilbertian and @Pepper12345 I appreciate your time and consideration. I will keep this idea in mind. Looking forward to renovate my house.
