Post and rail fence in domestic setting?

Hi all,

My yard is on a raised retaining wall next to walkway path. Want to secure garden for kids and dog, but fear it'll look silly to put a full panel fence on top of a wall. Been eyeing up post and rail fencing with chicken wire type thing to make it less harsh/imposing, as flowers and plants would then be able to grow through - but have I got blind goggles on and this type of fencing only looks good on farms? We live in a busy town.

I had it at the front of my old house, with rambling roses growing over it, but we were in a very rural setting. I think it could look ok but it would depend on the rest of the environment, and how comfortable you are being different.

What is there now? It's quite normal to have a fence panel on a retaining wall. Unless next to a road you can have 2m fence (measured from your ground level).

I think it’s the chicken wire that will make it look out of place. How about a tallish picket or slatted febce? That way plants can still grow through.
