L-shaped wardrobe?

Do you have one? How does the corner work?

There's one on the plans for a new-build, although we could have it changed still. No details yet, but want ideas of how it works in practice before we speak to the agent, or to gear myself up to convince DH we need to spend extra to fit my idea!

The long length goes right to the end then the L turn is a new section that has a door opening about half way down the long section if that makes sense.

It is hard to get yourself right to the end of the long section and you often have to reach very far or take clothes out to get to where the clothes at the end are.

Makes more sense to use the far end section that’s not as accessible as season swaps or clothes that you don’t wear often.

Do you have shelves or hanging space there, or both? The ikea ones seem to offset one side, but then you lose space.

One of my L shaped wardrobes has hanging space. Then the other has shelves for the bottom L section. One of mine is Ikea. The other bespoke for main bedroom.

Both systems have the same issue of difficult access to the end of the long section. But I prefer having the extra space for clothes.

This is what worries me! It's a flat so we will lose a lot of storage e.g. winter duvets that we currently keep in the attic etc. The planned dressing area of the master bedroom is outlined in blue. I was wondering if we should ask them to block off the corner so it's accessible from the bedroom side and add in a couple of half-depth cupboards (as one door in the corner of the room would look weird?) Then the corner would be accessible from the bedroom side and we'd have a deep cupboard to store things like duvets, blankets, sleeping bags etc. that don't really fit in a standard cupboard. Is that crazy? Do you think it would take up too much of the room?

From that drawing I would leave it as is. You’ve only got a small bit that’s hard to access. You can get at that end bit, but I suppose it depends how packed you pack your wardrobe! Mine are very packed. At least with hanging rails you can squash the hangers up to get at the end bit. Or take a few items off the hanging rail to get at the end items hanging.

Duvets, blankets etc I would personally put in those shrink vacuum bags and slide far under the bed where you can’t see them.

At the moment, reasonable. But I do switch out winter/summer clothes especially down coats and ski wear. I won't be able to do that any more as I won't have the attic to store things in. We'll have to have all the bed linen, towels etc for the whole family in our wardrobe too. I'd want to do everything possible to maximise storage from the start!

Well if you need to accommodate those extra things, then yes add in the extra storage you’ve drawn in pink as long as the space in the room allows.

Do the rooms allow space for blanket boxes etc that can be used as storage for towels, bed linen etc.

If you're looking to maximise storage then I can recommend ottoman beds. We fit a huge amount in ours and it's really no big deal to access stuff when needed.

PFBGirlAlert · 13/07/2024 16:43

I would love one but DH hates them! And I'm still expected to find space the store everything... I can't put stuff under the bed as we've underfloor heating.

Hopefully this image attaches! Its the old IKEA plan for my corner wardrobes in my old house. There are doors but hidden to show you how it was laid out.

If it's a dressing area facing away from the main bedroom could you just leave the doors off?
