what can't you live without in your home?

We're moving soon and have scope to make some improvements in our new home. I'm looking for inspiration on those things you use everyday that, now you have it, you couldn't live without it!

Thanks!

My non negotiables when we recently bought a house were:

-utility room with space for a washing machine and tumble dryer

-an upstairs and downstairs toilet

-two showers (because of the teens!)

-own driveway

Present day: my hand-painted antique Hungarian dresser base. It's a thing of such beauty and gives me joy every day. More prosaically, one thing I had in a self-build 20 years ago and still miss to this day was a built-in vacuum system. Omg that was amazing. Huge powerful cylinder on the wall in the garage. Outlets in various strategic places in the house all whizzed the dirt there, and we only had to carry the hose/attachments around the house. Best of all, it had a pet brush attachment so we could, quite literally, hoover the dog. She shed SO much hair but loved being brushed and the system was quiet because the power was all in the garage. It was bloody awesome and if I ever built another house I would 100% put one in - the best I could afford, too.

Me too! I was imagining it to be a kind of cocktail bar arrangement, a la Stanley Tucci. Sadly not.

Ooh, Stanley Tucci on hand making cocktails sounds much more life enhancing than a draining rack.

I had to look up scollapiatti too.

I love the idea of a motion controlled sensor light that actually stays on long enough for you to get your key out. I also like those combined power points which have USB points as well as conventional plugs. I would also be happy with a smaller living/dining area if I could have a utility room, especially one with space for one of those heated drying rack and an ironing board.
