are single glazed windows that bad?

We viewed a 1940s estate home today, part of a hall&gardens owned by a lady and a lord. Are they good homes built at this time? It is single glazing and oil fired.. my worries are the house will be freezing!
some of the windows have an extra layer over them like a sliding window.

anyone?

I live in a country where most places still have single glazing, and it gets cold in winter. Condensation is a very minor issue, I just wipe the bedroom windows in the morning, and I am very warm in my bed - and have never had to wear a coat! Don't be so dramatic.

Maybe you've also lived in an old house with single glazing through a few long damp dark British winters and loved it?

I'm not being dramatic, not everyone feel so fondly about going round the house in the morning with towels mopping up condensation as you do. Each to their own.

I have single glazed sash windows at the front of my house, and had secondary glazing installed (was relatively expensive and operates much like the sliding sashes).
The secondary glazing looks very unobtrusive, the room is noticeably warmer in winter - no longer get condensation on the sashes, and I'm really impressed with the improvements to sound insulation as well.

I live in a listed Georgian house with single glazing. They're not great re energy efficiency but it's fine. I'm sure I spend a bit more on heating than if they were double glazed but it's not as awful as some are making out. There's still loads of single glazing in this country and we've not all died from cold or overheating.
