Where in North Yorkshire?

We want to relocate from the North East to North Yorkshire. Various reasons (work/ seemingly better value for money) but one of the key reasons is to move away from the coast and the sea fret that seems to spoil the infrequent sunny days we do get! We are somewhat spoiled by the ease of getting into Newcastle for big shops, theatre, nights out, and then the busy town life with good food and drink spots in Cullercoats, Whitley Bay, and Tynemouth. We would like the feeling of being rural but ability to get taxis (or a bus into a busier spot without it being tooo far away). Is there anywhere which might similarly fit the bill placing us in good reach of the A19, a main train station, and walking distance of a decent pub and/ or restaurant? We have been thinking Northallerton or Thirsk but no idea about smaller villages in the surrounding areas? Thank you for any guidance you can share!

I grew up in Thirsk and now live in a village nearby. Thirsk and Northallerton are both nice towns with restaurants, shops etc, both have a train station, but I wouldn't say either are easy to get to a big city, the closest of which is York. The trains from Thirsk to York stop around 10pm and quite expensive, there is a bus service but it's a long rural route and infrequent. Thirsk train station is also weirdly placed - depending where in town you live it could be a long walk home, and again very limited (if any) bus options from the station. You can book taxis easily enough but no Uber or similar in Thirsk really. Northallerton is closer to Middlesbrough, but not sure what transport is like. Would also say neither feel particularly rural (but guess that depends on your definition of rural feeling!) Worth considering some of the villages nearer to York if you want good transport links to the city (such as Huby, Tollerton, Shipton, Stillington) - these all very rural feeling villages but 10-15 minutes drive to York and have slightly more bus services/cheaper taxis/some have Uber. Very easy to reach to A19, but more expensive to buy property and no train stations. Much more rural, so most will have a village pub, some have a small shop, but otherwise a drive to shops and restaurants. Hope this helps 😊

I'm a bit surprised by this post. There can't be many that want to do it this way around, as you say "the ease of getting into Newcastle for big shops, theatre, nights out, and then the busy town life with good food and drink spots in Cullercoats, Whitley Bay, and Tynemouth" plus the airport just 30 mins away on the metro - and to boot the lovely Northumberland on your doorstep with the wild country and excellent beaches up towards Scotland. I live right on the coast in this area and I agree I sometimes get fed up of the weather being worse than everywhere else (although only two sea frets this year to date - half a mile inland and the sun is shining !) and the winter can be harsh, but I think there would be far more drawbacks from moving. But it is useful to hear other people's views too. I love the villages around Pickering (family links) but they do not have what we have here.

I wouldn’t move to Yorkshire, the villages etc are beautiful and for walking it’s great. But the transport links are awful, you aren’t going to get anywhere quickly or with ease.

Lovely place for holidays etc but not for living in.
