Hi - I am in the process of sorting the kitchen layout. This is what the kitchen designer did for me. Do you think this layout works?

Not sure I would put a F/F next to an oven.

Does that not make it work overtime as the oven will heat it up ?

I would also swap the sink and dishwasher round.

But that is because I am lazy and like the dw as close to as many cupboards as possible.

Also, you don't look like you have much countertop space. By the time you put in toaster, kettle, coffee machine, airfryer, microwave other crap (if it is not integrated into the units you have) you will have not much countertop space. I think you need countertop space close to ovens/hobs etc.

Also where are the plugs.

I did have an oven next to the fridge freezer in my old house and it worked fine. The peninsula is the main counter top for food prep and serving up food etc. I am not thinking about the plugs just yet as want to get the layout right first. We’re having a pantry cupboard on one side of the alcove where there will be a toaster and coffee machine inside plus we’re having a Quettle tap. We will also have a utility room so there will be more storage in there for stuff we don’t use much. Microwave is built in above the oven.

It's a long walk to empty pans of boiling water from the hob to the sink. Also not much worktop space. It's a bit of an awkward room though with the 2 doors and the chimney breast, it's a shame it's not a wider room so you could fit an island in the middle. What is the rest of the room used for? If you post a layout of the whole areas people might be able to make some suggestions?

Not sure this is the best option and you have a utility room on the plan, so do you need the small wall cabinets, as making it look very dark. Could you run the tall cupboards over the entrance to the utility and make the door through a faux cabinet, plus add an additional tall one?

The chimney breast and doors has made the kitchen layout restrictive. Tried the island option which didn’t work mainly cos of the walkway to the dining area and I’d have my back to the hob in chimney breast when doing food prep and I’d have to have the sink on the island too.

Do you have a floorplan of the whole space?

CaribouCarafe · 04/07/2024 16:10

I was also going to mention the distance from the sink to the hob, it'd be a pain for pasta/potatoes etc and could be a bit dangerous given there's a door to your hallway in the middle (e.g. child bolting through the kitchen halfway through precariously transporting a boiling pot of pasta to the sink).

It might also help to have the kitchen door swinging in the opposite direction (into the hallway) so you can better access the countertop space behind it.

Ignore the corner settee. The island is too big on one of them but this is the other ideas we had - there’s a lack of workspace if we went for those options.

Are you determined to have a sofa in there? Feels like the layout of the kitchen could be improved if you didn't need to accommodate that. I'm personally not a fan of using the kitchen as a corridor (which is essentially how it will work for you at the moment)

ALT72 · 04/07/2024 17:15

No, ignore the sofa and yes I agree about the corridor comment which is why we’ve come up with a peninsula instead.

Could you have the wall with the chimney on - all with the kitchen units right along into the end of the lounge area where the sofa half is.

And having the sofa where the island picture now is and the TV on the wall opposite the chimney and then the dinning table where the sofa now is. Just a thought - I don't know your room measurements.

Then you've got all your kitchen on one side - so no going to the sink with boiling pans etc over the doorway. the folk watching tv have their backs to you so they are there but not watching you cook and the dining table is on hand for the meal?
