Avoiding paying 2 lots of mortgage first month?

Very confused about how to work this out! Is it just something to ask our solicitor?
were also renting so a bit worried about ending up paying rent plus 2x mortgage during the first month.
Is it about calendar month?

I don't think you've given anywhere near enough detail for anybody to be able to advise.

Usually you get a months grace and the first payment for the new mortgage comes out at the beginning of the next month.

So if you move house on the 3rd August, your mortgage for your old house comes out as normal. Your provider does all the calcs for the 3 days or whatever and credits back the unused bit and you are billed my the new mortgage provider on 3rd September.

Can't comment on rent and why you might have 3 sets of bills here.

I think this is the issue, I’m not sure of what I need to know to work it out. The solicitors pack mentioned the possibility of it happening and whether we’d want to specify a completion date to avoid but no further info. Perhaps I’ll ask them for clarification

Say you move on the 15th Sept. Your first mortgage payment will be in October, and it will be for the whole of October's payment plus half a month for September. You should have an indication of what your first payment will be from the mortgage company. You won't ever be paying double mortgage, just the amount required for the month you're in, plus whatever part month you moved in.

Rent is tricky as ideally you shouldn't give notice until you have a completion date. It usually means you will have an overlap and be paying for 2 homes.

Ah ok this makes sense and is really helpful. Think I was over complicating it. Thank you!

Hand notice in on exchange then ask to complete four weeks after ( so no extra rent) then mortgage is full payment on your agreed date plus the number of extra days when you move in.
Yes you can request four weeks between exchange and completion

With us we completed on 31st December, so there wasnt time for new DD to start or old DD to stop. So on 2nd Jan full payment went out from old mortgage, was then credited back about a week later, payment on 1st Feb was Jan and Feb of new mortgage. We just saved back the old mortgage credit to cover the feb payment. So it really does depend on where in the month you complete, but your mortgage company and/or solicitor will send you a schedule of the estimated first payment and the date of it before you complete.
