Do you feel lucky to have a house

I am early 40s and have a nice house which i constantly feel very fortunate to have. I rented all my 20s so can still relate to how renting felt like. I often think I am very lucky to be in this position and slightly embarrassed. I did work hard I just know that things could have been different. Does anyone else have any feelings like this?

It's not just luck, no, of course not. I, too, could have not done a thing to my house and tried to sell it in that condition, wouldn't have made as much money on it or maybe not even managed to sell it at all. Or at a loss. I worked hard and controlled as many factors as I could, tried to be wise and realistic to the market/area I was in, etc. I think it's possible to be hard working and lucky. :)

How "HARD" do you think you should need to work to be able to afford your own home? Would you say that, for example, care workers, or labourers, or other people on minimum wage are simply not working "hard" enough? Or professionals in the south east? Are they not working "hard" enough either?

Hard work is not just work in a job, but also working through education, to do a job that paysgood enough. Some jobs, simply don't pay enough, so if you want to own your own home, it's best to research what your chosen profession will pay.

My friend's daughter wanted to be a teacher. So she asked her daughter if she knew what teachers got paid. She told her that the expensive cars she likes, would be unaffordable on a teacher's salary. Her daughter likes going on holidays and had expensive taste. She told her that holidaying in peak time and her high taste for designer clothes would be a challenge on a teacher's salary, so she needs to think properly about it.

If you're on a minimum wage, I don't see how one could afford their own house in many parts of the UK.

I do realise that these days, even professionals (like social workers/teachers/nurses) will struggle to buy a house in places like London. The deposit is a lot.

I just don't like the inference that owning your own home, is through luck though.

I worked a second job when saving for our deposit.

@SirChenjins

Of course it’s luck. For example ,it’s sheer luck that you are able to work and that you’re not living with a chronic illness which makes it impossible for you to work.

With that mindset, it's luck they those who are alive are living isn't it.

Acknowledging that it’s luck not to be ill is hardly a mindset. It’s fact.
