Do sliding doors still have door frames?

I would love to change the kitchen door to one but cannot imagine how it would look..

Do you mean an external sliding door or internal pocket door?

Houseplanter · 30/06/2024 07:55

An internal door. It doesn't need to be hidden (if that's a pocket door?).

I have a sliding kitchen door. It doesn't have a doorframe but it does have a pelmet above the door to hide the sliding mechanism.

A pocket door slides into a hidden gap inside a wall. Usually will have a frame & architrave around it, so when it’s shut it looks a lot like a normal door (except it’s got a flat handle)

A barn door has no pocket, it slides along a rail attached to the wall. Usually wouldn’t have a frame I think.

Note that a barn door may not comply with fire regs if it’s for a kitchen

@minipie thank you, it was a barn door type I was considering, and I had wondered about fire regulations.

Would it really matter though? I realise we would have to accept the risks but I don't want to invalidate insurance!

Our kitchen door takes up room when open and gets properly in the way and just looking for solutions.

@ingkir I’m fairly sure it would invalidate your insurance and it would be obvious to the insurer.

We have two pocket doors in our kitchen, we had to use fire rated pocket door kits and install fire doors. If you have room for a barn door though, you may be able to install a pocket door, it would just be more expensive.

I believe sometimes you can negotiate with building control about these things if you install, say, sprinklers in your kitchen but that would likely be very costly as well!

Barn doors are also not very good at blocking noise and food smells, as well as fire. But there may be other solutions. Can you draw a diagram?
