Is this lead paint (pics included in post)

Just bought a house. It was built in 1950 and has been sold quite a few times since. I’m pregnant so want to be sure that this isn’t lead paint, and want to know what to do if it is? Attached some pics of various door frames and window sills throughout the house

I don't think you can tell by looking. The manufacturer of lead based paint was banned in the UK in 1992 though, and you can buy lead paint testing kits on line for about £10.

LuckysDadsHat · 29/06/2024 13:32

No one can tell you from pictures or from looking. You need to test the paint. Most likely yes, some of those layers will have lead in them due to the age of the house.

People posted on your other thread about how it will not be a danger to you, I can understand your concerns you are pregnant but you are not achieving anything by worrying, other than causing yourselves more stress.

The only way you can guarantee it is paint containing lead or not is to send it away to be analysed, unless there just happens to be a tin of paint in the house of the same colour with a date on manufacturer before 1990 and ingredients which state it has lead.

By the time you send it away to be analysed, it will be quicker to paint over it.

You don't need to send anything off for analysis. These are cheap enough from Amazon and easy to use.

The marks on the plaster look like condensation/damp damage, not paint. Lead paint would usually be on the woodwork, not the walls. The woodwork in your photo looks like it might be old enough to be lead. It will not hurt you if you leave it alone, and if you do disturb it the risks are very low. If it makes you anxious, just paint over it and forget about it. It doesn't need to be removed to be safe.

Showing my age that there are kits available on Amazon now!

MrsApplepants · 29/06/2024 13:59

The only way to tell is to test. Sometimes it is easy to see as lead paint sometimes crazes in a brickwork type pattern but I wouldn’t stress about it. Just don’t do any sanding or heat gun removal.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 29/06/2024 14:15

If you’re going to strip the paintwork get a test kit. If you aren’t just paint over it.

Iliketulips · 29/06/2024 16:11

Test. If it contains lead and you plan to decorate in the next few months, maybe you can go out while OH does it and get him to leave windows open. I'm sure he'll want what's best for you and DB, but if he grumbles I'm sure you can help with other things, ie painting walls at a low level, going out for decorating/diy items, check out things you want to order for new home/baby.

BMW6 · 29/06/2024 16:38

Blimey OP just paint over it!
