would you buy a house near a cemetery?

If it were your dream house?

Yes we have found another dream house, this time not next to a motorway but a cemetery. Its not visible from the road, in fact the actual tombstones are probably a road away. But the sign and a blocked entrance for the cemetry is right opposite our front garden.

Does this affect property pricing? Would it be difficult to sell on later? Its a stunning house, seems to have interest already.

thankyou

It being next to a cemetary wouldn't bother me in itself.

Gangs of kids hanging around the cemetary may be something you want to think about.

Cars coming and going all day as relatives visit graves may be something else you want to consider.

But being so close to the graves, no, it would be peaceful I think.

Bewilderbeast · 09/04/2008 21:07

yes, my last house was next to a cemetery, very quiet alhtough I would check that the cemetary is well maintained by the council/church and that the gates are lost at night. The only reason I say this is that they can be a great place for youths to hang out.

Oh goodness, I'd not care one jot about being near a cemtry. No noisy neighbours!!

well it would be dead quiet.

[sorry. couldn't help myself]

fleximum · 09/04/2008 21:10

Is it a nice cemetery or one of those grim municipal ones? Old cemeteries can be beautiful and I wouldn't mind living next to one but I have to admit, I would be worried about how easy it would be to sell on.

Monkeybird · 09/04/2008 21:11

and quite possibly the dead centre of town?

theyoungvisiter · 09/04/2008 21:11

depends on the cemetery - next to a delightful village church with adjacent burial ground full of charming lichened graves and tumble-down crosses where the village families were laid to rest for generations - no, wouldn't bother me at all and I would far rather have that as a view than a carpark!

Next to a huge industrial-sized inner city cemetery with own crematorium and disaffected kids hanging around of an evening, yes, it might bother me.

We have!! The house we are renovating faces directly on to the wall of an old victorian cemetary. From downstairs you can just see the trees and wall across the street. From upstairs we have a wonderful view of all the 'sleeping neighbours'
Its not used anymore and all the gothic monuments are lovely to look at. The other side of the cemetary is just moorland for about 20 miles so its incredibly peaceful.

vannah · 09/04/2008 21:34

thankyou. It is a very well maintained cemetry and quite well locked up, we were there at about 6 and couldnt access it. But the view from a hole in the fence looked lovely. The area is very village like...
