Mould behind toilet cistern

spikeandbuffy · 28/06/2024 22:38

So I've persuaded my dad to help me remove the cistern Grin after ages of bodging it by using mould remover spray

My plan is to treat the mould, let it dry out, sand/scrape as needed and paint with this (pic attached) as a longer term solution

Other advice welcome

My question is, what would you treat the mould with? The toilet is on an outside wall hence the mould. I have white vinegar, HG mould remover and an Amazon account at my disposal

There also appears to be a giant hole in the floor behind the toilet but I'll get to that bit eventually

Hg is best for removing mould.

Thanks, I have about half a bottle
I guess I just saturate it and let it dry out before I start sanding/scraping anything that's needed

It doesn't need to be cosmetically perfect as you won't see it but I really want to prevent the mould

If it’s behind the cistern then it’s likely caused by condensation (dew point plus a lot of moisture in the air). Meaning it will return sooner or later.

Make sure to wipe the area once a day, just to get rid of the water on the wall and the cistern. Also, consider fitting an extractor fan to improve ventilation.

@rumnraisins extractor fan already in place, I run it after my shower and leave it on for a good hour or more
I can't wipe behind it is the issue - there's no real gap between the cistern and wall, I can get a piece of cardboard behind, that kind of gap

Suspect the hole in the floor isn't helping but hopefully have a better idea what's going on when we take it apart

I know you won’t but just in case: don’t put anything organic there, mould loves organic materials to grow on.

Perhaps the narrowness of the space is the issue then. I think removing the plaster and replastering before painting might help. Spores are likely in the plaster if it’s been mouldy for a while. Then repaint with anti mould?

Replastering might be beyond me but I'll see what the wall looks like
TBH given the builders, it could just be cardboard behind there Grin my neighbour was walking up the stairs and their stairs actually detached from the wall Blush

Doesn't fill one with confidence, does it? 😬 Good luck!

Nope. It's a running joke that when my dad/tradesperson/me does any DIY, we will find something that makes you go WTAF Blush
Doing it on Tuesday so fingers crossed....

Insulated wallpaper might help? As long as the wall doesn't need to be permiable to moisture I would stick some up once you have cleaned the wall. It will insulate it and prevent the condensation from happening as much.
