What sort of storage do you have or would you like to have?

Halfway through a renovation. I hear a lot about having enough/the right “storage”. But what does this mean? An attic? Wardrobes? Cupboard under the stairs? What would your ideal house have in terms of storage?

I have under stairs storage, a small storage room on the first floor, I keep my shoes in there on shelves as well as things like ironing board, drying rack and suitcases.
Storage cupboard in the bathroom for towels and bedsheets and built in wardrobes in bedrooms. I feel like that’s an optimal amount of storage for me.

We just had have new fitted wardrobes (prior to that free standing and very old not fit for purpose wardrobes). For us this is proper storage. Everything is put away and not much clutter elsewhere. We have lived here for 5 yrs, could not afford them with the initial refurb. Used a local small business.

In an ideal world.
Large utility room with lots of space for all cleaning and laundry paraphernalia.
Linen cupboard.
Double wardrobes in all bedrooms.
Large double vanity in bathroom with drawers. And possibly shelves.
Pantry in the kitchen.
Bookshelves.
Shed or garage for all DIY and garden stuff.

Cupboard for coats and shoes, where can you put a hoover and mops and brooms? Recycling? Holiday stuff? Christmas decorations? Stuff that is being passed on to younger kids while they grown into it. Craft supplies (probably not an issue for most people!)

We live in a Victorian cottage so have a lot of built-in storage. We have a cupboard by the front door for coats, and understand cupboard for all the cleaning stuff, a large airing cupboard, large cupboard on landing and a cupboard built into the recess next to the chimney breast in two of the bedrooms. We also have two double Pax wardrobes in our bedroom. I'd absolutely love a utility though, as that would make the kitchen much tidier!

It's the bigger and more awkward things that you still need out regularly that we found difficult in a rental that barely had any storage:

Clean bedding and towels
Ironing board
Hoover, mop, bucket
Coats, shoes including out of season
Travel related items like bike helmets
Bags of things like swimming kit
Picnic stuff
Outdoor toys to take to the park

Less needed but still need to go somewhere:
Suitcases
Christmas tree and decorations

Also wardrobes and drawers for clothes. Obviously these could be freestanding rather than fitted.

And bathroom storage - enough drawers and cupboards to put as many toiletries away as possible.

Makes it much easier to keep clean.

Built on under stairs storage that goes from the first step to the last is amazing, like this www.sharps.co.uk/inspiration/clever-storage-ideas-under-stairs
