Edwardian maisonettes what’s the sound proofing like?

Can anyone please tell me what the noise insulation is generally like in purpose built Edwardian maisonettes?

Looking in the Charlton SE7 & Ladywell Se13 area, ideally top floor end of terrace if I can find one.

As far as I can tell its just a brick wall between flats and standard joists plus timber boards between floors.

I’m looking to buy my first property and I’m noise sensitive. Living in London I can’t afford a house and the new builds with better sound proofing (2003+) all have ever increasing service charges.

The other option is a 2 story top floor ex council maisonette built in the 1970's The upper floor bedroom has no neighbours around but it lacks character somewhat.

I’d be happy to sound proof my bedroom but that doesn’t always work. Thanks : )

I'm noise sensitive too! My property is an end-terrace 1970-built house.

My brother's family live in a mid-terrace Edwardian property. Although it has lovely character features, they have had issues with noise over the years, and I personally would not choose a mid-terraced property, but my brother's family have happily lived there for over 15 years.

The worst noise I've experienced is loud music, but fortunately, my current neighbours don't play music, so it can depend a lot on who your neighbours are. And they have children, so it is quiet during the night.

Find out who the neighbours are. Visit the property evenings and weekends when people are more likely to be at home. Ask about any noise issues the vendor has experienced. Have an acoustic survey done.

The sound proofing in Edwardian conversions, in my experience, is adequate at best.

If it's an issue for you OP, I'd be looking at the new build.

Sorry, just seen its a purpose built one!

The Edwardians didn’t have televisions, stereo music system, things that bleep and thud and whirr…..just people, and maybe a piano
