East Facing Garden - Yay or Nay?

We've seen a house we like, but not love. Reasons being that it's not in the area that we would want, but another niggle is the garden, in that it is East Facing. I've only heard that South Facing is the best - in fact, our current garden is South-Facing and we get lots of sun throughout the day, although the front of the house can be gloomy in the winter.

Would you discount a house is the garden was East Facing?

Well done.

I have SE facing garden.

It's as much about how long/wide it is and what is to the sides as which direction it faces.

If you are in a built up area there are programs on the web that will allow you to input building heights and do shadow analysis on your exact location.

I discovered this thread after OP's offer was accepted, so congratulations!

We have a 40 foot long east facing garden and I love it. My old house was South facing and there were some days, even in the midst of winter I'd have to go to the other side of the house as it was too hot. I only had one room facing North (my bedroom) and on some summer's days I used to spend my whole day in there sitting on the bed because the rest of the house was unbearable.

Now, I love my East facing garden. The patio (close to the house) starts to become shaded from just after lunch, but the bottom of the garden is still sunny. You have the luxury of being able to choose between sun and shade.

My DP's have a north facing garden that's about 100 foot long and they're also loving the fact that they can choose where to sit. They've got chairs and benches all around the garden for different times of day!

I'd choose an East facing garden over a South facing one every time now.

Thank you so much for your lovely messages! Trying not to get too emotionally attached now so have resisted trying to figure out where I am going to put the garden furniture ...
