Can I live with a house after a full rewire and not made good

Hi all, I'm going to get my new purchase (period property) rewired as recommended by the electrician and EICR report. This is fine and I'm happy to do it. I will not replaster yet.

Only thing is, I need to save up a bit for about 6 months to do the rest of the house up. I have some savings now and after the rewire but I didn't want to touch it incase of unexpected surprises and things to fix in the house. I'd rather live in the house for a bit too, to get to know it.

Anyways, my question is: after the rewiring, there's going to be holes in the walls. I'm happy to clean up all the dust as soon as the rewiring is complete etc. But, will it be dusty and horrible to live in for the next 6 months? I just don't know what to expect as I've never rewired a house before.

thanks

Ours was made good by the electricians but still needed plastering and painting - it took us over 10 years before we finished the final room. It was fine - nobody died!

Hi there
i know this thread is old but i was wondering how you got on with the rewiring? Also, I was wondering how much damage was caused by the rewire? We are in the process of buying a new house that needs a rewire, but the redecorating costs after are sky high (as it needs re plastering)
can you get away with not re plastering and just painting? The house is old so will need painting / stripping and carpets removed, but I’m wondering if there is a middle ground instead of spending 40K + on a total refurb.
Thanks !

@bluelinebrownpen you would be better off starting your own thread and @ ing the person who posted this thread.

People will just post replies to the original question without reading your post.

You can rewire, plaster and decorate a room at a time. It is slightly more expensive than getting it all done at the same time, but it means you can do some of the work yourself and so you can save costs that way, by painting which will save you up to £1000 per room, running the wiring yourself and getting the electrician to check it and connect it up, or even just channeling out the plaster where the wires will go for the sockets.
