Oil to gas central heating

So, we’ve found a property that we love, only problem is that it is currently using oil heating. Just wondering if anyone knows a ballpark figure for how much the whole thing will cost to have changed to gas central heating (that’s to have gas connected, a meter and boiler installed) and whether we could just keep the existing radiators?
For context, the neighbours all have gas supply connected so it wouldn’t be a huge distance.
We’ve also considered an air heat pump, but I’ve been looking on here at everyone’s experiences with them, and it seems unanimously negative.

Thanks in advance ☺️

It depends on how long the gas pipe needs to be and we have a very long drive and the boiler is at the back of the house. It was cheaper if we dug the trench for the pipe ourselves but at the time it was too expensive so we stuck to oil.

@Diversion that makes sense, thank you

In our last house we changed from oil (no option for gas) to an ASHP. No regrets whatsoever, it was brilliant.

We've now moved to a house with gas heating but I really miss the heat pump. if I was putting in a new heating system I would have an ASHP over gas any day.

@EmmaGrundyForPM might have to keep looking into a heat pump, just think with it being an older house it might not be very efficient, guess I’ll just have to keep looking, thank you ☺️

What's wrong with oil?

ZoeyBartlett · 19/06/2024 22:08

We had oil but changed to gas. Too far to have mains so have an lpg tank buried in the garden it has a sensor so gets topped up. Calories did all the work - I have a feeling they had a deal whereby the tank burial was v cheap. About £5k in total. Well worth it though.

@ZoeyBartlett Perfect, thank you, was thinking it’d probably be around that amount

We’ve an ASHP and it’s fantastic- super quiet and costs 40% less than gas to run. They can work perfectly well in older houses with some basic draughtproofing, I was listening to an installer the other day who’s been putting them in the granite houses all over Dartmoor and another in Scotland where they’re very popular.

How old is ‘older’? Ours is a 60’s semi with 20yr old DG and a decent blanket in the loft.

What state is the internal plumbing in? Do the radiators look original or are some more modern?

We had a quote to go from electric heaters & water tank to gas (so all new pipe work, radiators, boiler etc) and it was about £8000, based in Warwickshire.
we’ve decided to go for an ASHP instead - which came about £1k cheaper with the government grant

We previously had oil central heating and it was absolutely fine. It is a bit more expensive to run than gas but not so much to make it financially worthwhile to pay for a new gas connection.

We have a number of friends with ASHP in older houses (as in pre-cavity walls). They're all very happy with the performance and cost to run.

We have oil at our current house. Never had it before. Other than it being outside the energy price caps it has been fine. Rather than pay for a gas connection we will see where heat pump technology is when our oil boiler finally gives up.
