We own a flat in a converted building (old brewery). The front door on every flat has recently been repaired by the management company to comply with fire regs and now has a self closing hinge mechanism on the back (I don’t know the technical term..!). However, aside from the workmanship being terrible, this enormous hinge means we can’t open the door fully any more. We can’t get an open pushchair through the door, and more importantly, a person in a wheelchair could no longer fit through the door.
We’ve complained to the property management company about it, specifically the poor finish and the reduced opening but they’ve come back and said tough, it needs to comply with fire regs. Does anyone know if this is correct, I am surprised it’s ok to have a front door that a wheelchair user can no longer use as an exit route in a fire (there is no other exit door to the flat).
