For people who live on a busy road - did you just get used to it?

I panic bought a house in an area 10 mins drive from where we rented for 9 years which although not far, I didn't know well...but my children and I were homeless (and with retrospect, I wish we could have stayed with my mum for longer)

The road is on a hill, and joins an A road. The cars constantly speed, my both of my sons have had near misses trying to get in the car for school, my youngest nearly fell because people refuse to wait 10 seconds, then my car was damaged, so I now park in a side street.

I have emailed my council and local MP. A 20mph speed limit is coming into force early next year, but I KNOW no one will pay attention. There are no physical measures in place.

I'm so fed up of hearing cars tearing down the road...will I get used to it? I just get so upset with how dangerous people drive, they don't care about the residents.

We have triple glazing at the front, and a garden, we are also a level above the pavement (steps to front door), I'm going to put a small fence up.

Yes it will just drown out into background noise. It did for me anyway

Get a water feature in the garden

I feel your pain and yes you can get used to it during the day I think but what bothers me is at night in summer when you want windows open it's too noisy to sleep, we have fans instead now. There are pitiful rectangular speed bumps down my road but they don't stop anyone roaring down here at 40+mph.

You are on high alert to it which makes it even noisier and harder to ignore.

We only notice it when out the front. We have got used to it but I still regularly message my council, highways department etc to keep asking them to do something. Persistence can pay off. You can request they do a speed survey on the road. They don't have to comply and might say there's no need as the 20mph limit is coming, but you don't lose anything in asking.
I actually do think the change to 20mph will probably make a difference. It has in the roads in my local area. Just wish my road would get a lower speed limit.

I never got used to it.

I do think you just get used to it. I did anyway. When I moved to somewhere less urban it was the quiet that bothered me at first! And birds and other creatures make a feckin racket early in the morning let me tell you, lol.

I think you can get used to it. I live near an airport and don't notice the planes at all anymore. Just try not to dwell on it otherwise it really won't stop bugging you. Also make sure the children get in the car from the pavement side and clamber over and the same getting out.
People are fuckers and don't give a shiny shit about residents unfortunately.

I got totally used to it but we are rural so it's only busy day time, what I would advise is really explaining about if they loose their ball etc not to get it etc - as they will look both ways going accross but often not returning

What helps more than speed bumps are chicanes where the narrowing of the road helps, or the narrowing of the road where each direction takes alternate priorities
