Drill bit size - quick question

When putting in a Rawlplug- does the drill bit need to be the same size as the Rawlplug or slightly smaller?

Slightly smaller. 5.5mm drill bit is perfect for 6mm real plugs.

Thank you!

Thank you!

Don’t do as above. The different colour rawl plugs correspond to different drill sizes and they are the ones you should use. When you put your screw in it will expand the plug and push out the lugs to hold it tight. If you drill a smaller hole your going to need to hammer it in and that will damage / flatten the plug meaning less of it is in the hole to anchor your fixing.

Great question! The drill bit should be the same size as the Rawlplug for a snug fit. So, if you're using a 6mm Rawlplug, use a 6mm masonry drill bit.
However, if you're drilling into a softer material (like aerated block), you might want to go slightly smaller (e.g., 5.5mm) so the plug grips better. For harder surfaces like brick or concrete, stick with the exact size of the plug.
Also, make sure to clear out the dust from the hole before inserting the plug for a secure hold!

I have a tiny bottle brush which came with a pack of reusable straws which I use for cleaning out holes for rawlplugs.
