What’s Deeside like?

My oldest son is looking to buy a house soon with his girlfriend. They live in Chester now and are looking to live somewhere quite rural at around £300,000. Just wondering what Deeside is like as I know it’s quite close to Chester?

I live around 40 minutes (Conwy) from Deeside and whilst I'm sure there are nice parts, I've always thought it was a bit run down, Flint too. Someone who knows the area better than me might disagree though.

Has he considered Broughton? Not so rural but quite nice I think.

Yeah Deeside is a little rough in my opinion. Do they want/need to stay in Wales? If so I think there are some nicer parts of Harwarden. If they want a lovely location and don't mind compromising on size of property they could try something like these up the Wirral in Willaston. Lovely village with country walks down the Wirral way and not that far from Wales and Chester.

Deeside is a shithole. Far nicer places in his budget close by

Edited to say Deeside encompasses a few towns so I would say avoid, Shotton, Queensferry, some part of Connahs Quay, Flint, Aston, Garden City and Sandycroft/Mancot

Dessie is a total hole. Go Wirral

Not nice. Hawarden is lovely - but not any close to the same price range. Mold is very nice - as are the villages around it.

I agree - Deeside is the wrong area to be looking in. There is a reason property is cheaper there. If they want rural I would have thought that looking more in the Kelsall direction would be the way to go.
I live fairly close to Willaston mentioned up thread and it is a lovely. It may not however be quite rural enough if that’s what they are really wanting. For me personally it would be perfect as I wouldn’t want to live in the middle of nowhere.

What is normally called Deeside isn't rural at all - its a collection of small towns - Queensferry, Shotton, Connahs Quay, Flint and the areas immediately around. They are a bit run down, although places like Wepre Park can be nice, but crowded in summer.

The area around Mold is more rural. Previous posters are correct that the Wirral and Kelsall area are nice, but they are also more expensive than North Wales. There are nice rural areas in North Wales, but Deeside is more of an industrial area.

I live very close-the towns around Deeside are cheap for a reason. If they want more rural, get them to look around areas between Mold and Denbigh. Do they have to commute to Chester? Villages close to the A55 are worth a look. Outskirts of Holywell. Dyserth. Rhosesmor. Here’s an example.

Actually, Mancot is ok-but there’s currently a controversial housing development going through planning at the moment so the rural fields might be lost!

Thanks for your replies! I’ll pass on your comments to my son. Judging from what you’ve said I think I’ll advise him to give Deeside a miss😂

I’m considering buying a house in Dee Gardens but I’m unsure about the local area and the community. Could someone provide some insights? Is it a good place to raise a family?

Almostwelsh · 07/10/2024 14:56

That's near Queensferry I think. It's quite a deprived area and I believe the secondary school closed a few years ago. People tend to like Hawarden High school, but you might be out of catchment and the other secondaries aren't so good.

It is fairly convenient for trains, shops and takeaways though.
