Free Smoke Alarms and Fire Safety Checks

Am sure this has been done before, but it is still useful and potentially life saving

We arranged a visit from our local fire service to advise us on how many smoke alarms we needed in our house plus escape routes etc

We had 3 smoke alarms fitted for free, and had plenty of advice which i hope i will never have to use, but was so useful

I am in Essex and am happy to give the number out, but am sure lots of other counties do it

Not CO detectors, but they recommend which ones to buy

We have always had a CO detector (one of those card thingies) but will upgrade to a battery operated one i think

And a good thing to add - is everyone to check their smoke alarms to ensure the batteries are OK & to make sure that children know what the alarm sounds like & what to do if they hear it

mine needs a new battery it keeps beeping at me.

the local fire department gave free alarms to all families that didn't have one.

I have CO detector, the battery one, as if the card one goes black in the middle of the night you are not going to see it.

We also have the expensive smoke alarms that detect both slow burning and quick burning fires. My boys love it when I test them. I do it with the Dyson hose with the wand still inside, with the crevice tool on the end when I am hoovering the landing. I can reach the lounge one from the stairs.

My FIL is anal organised and changes his batteries on the same date every year, it is on his calendar, also valves on things like his cold water storage tank in the loft.

The best bit was the big shiny Fire Engine they came in.... Great timing, we had 3 of DS's mates round & the wonderful Firefighters let them climb in & put the lights on . God bless 'em, they don't take bookings for birthday parties tho'.

nannyL · 08/04/2008 21:27

the firemen visited me in their fireengine just last weekend
they fitted 6 smoke alarms for 3 and i only have a small 3 bed house!

nannyL · 08/04/2008 21:28

i mean 6 smoke alarms for FREE (not 3)

RubySlippers · 09/04/2008 08:53

i was GUTTED the fire officer didn't arrive in a fire engine

it is a great service isn't it?
