How does it work, is it expensive, does it save hours with the Viakal? Hard water haters please tell me your thoughts, thank you.

My water softener uses block salt. I order 12 bags at a time, it’s actually cheaper direct than on amazon, although you do need somewhere dry to store it.

I have been considering it.

Things to consider I have found :

i) Does it reduce the water pressure/flow rate significantly by being in line ?

ii) What type of salt does it take (customised blocks can be more expensive).

iii) How much salt does it put in the water in exchange for the Calcium ? I don't think it normally is a very high concentration, but if you have medical issues with sodium consumption it is something worth considering.

  1. Not noticeably. We are in a 4 bed with 2 bathrooms, and it handles it fine. I have a 22mm version.
  2. We use the manufacturer block salt (Harvey). Two blocks per pack, and we use about £60 - £70 per year.
  3. We don't have softened water from the drinking water tap in the kitchen, although that is filtered with a BWT cartridge that comes with the boil tap. It has a digital meter on, so I know when to change it. They last about 8 months at our usage.

I find this really really weird.

Me too. A nice white toilet is one of the main benefits for us and saves chucking so much limescale remover/bleach down it.
