What flooring is it?

Theedgeoftheabyss · 04/06/2024 20:45

It's balterio.

I was under the impression there has to be an expansion gap
only get the flush look when they saw a bit off the bottom of skirting

but I would expect some beading or trim

DoublePeonies · 04/06/2024 21:01

Is the installer saying that is finished? Because to my eye, the job needs completing.

TheOneWithUnagi · 04/06/2024 21:02

If it's laminate then yet it needs a gap so will need scotia. In fact looks like there isn't enough of a gap on your 2nd pic.

NewYearTimeToChange · 04/06/2024 21:04

@Theedgeoftheabyss that's a terrible job. The beading is the wrong colour (did you know it would be?), doesn’t fit the wall and looks awful. The other picture shows a totally unacceptable gap if beading is not to be fitted. To fit flush you would need to remove skirting boards and refit over so no gap showing and if you have beading it needs to continue round corners and preferably be a better colour match. I would be extremely unimpressed with that job:

PatternedLlama · 04/06/2024 21:05

I have laminate flooring and we removed the skirting, laid the floor and put the skirting back on.

The remove skirting/scotia beading should have been a discussion before the floor was laid. I would expect any poor workmanship to be rectified but I wonder if the gap they left would have more scotia put over it.

Theedgeoftheabyss · 04/06/2024 21:06

Thanks all. I'm not sure what to say. I've got to talk to the company tomorrow. It's a local one with a good reputation and everything. I'm more upset that the trim has been nailed to the kitchen units! I thought it would be fitted to the units and then sealed with silicone.

The skirting round the outside of the room doesn't get fitted until early July (joiners are rare here) so we're not bothered about that as it will look neat once done. It's the awful Scotia. What alternatives are there?

TheHornedOne · 04/06/2024 21:07

You don’t saw the skirting!

You remove the entire skirting, put the flooring down and then put the skirting back on top.

The gap should be behind the front edge of the skirting.

If you don’t do it correctly by removing the skirting and then putting it back you end with gaps and having to put down god-awful Scotia which looks very cheap and nasty even when it’s not been a pigs ear like the hilarious bit shown that doesn’t even run a full length let alone round the corner.

Sorry OP but I would not be paying for what you have got, but then I would also have been very clear with the floorer what had to be done right from the start, maybe you got an amateur who is used to doing bodge jobs that require Scotia and you simply expected a proper job.

If you do have to stick with it and get Scotia all the way round the skirting then I would be inclined to paint it same as the walls, as that Scotia doesn’t even match the flooring!

Vettrianofan · 04/06/2024 21:08

Wait to see if he comes back. Perhaps he had stuff to pick up to finish the job.

TheHornedOne · 04/06/2024 21:11

are you saying the laminate doesn’t go under the units?
it goes up-to the units?
omg!!!

You should have removed the units and done the whole floor correctly. When you paint your bedroom walls do you paint around the wardrobes or do you move them then put them back?

Yes you do saw it there a power tool especially for the job it can take 1/4 of an inch off the bottom leaving all your paint work and plaster untouched so you don’t have to redecorate

Oleo24 · 04/06/2024 21:16

I wouldn’t be happy with that either.

Theedgeoftheabyss · 04/06/2024 21:21

We were assured it would be fit up to the edge of the units. We were assured it would be flush. Hence not sure why there is Scotia in the first place as the skirting will go in around the edges of the kitchen which is fine. It's just the units.

KievLoverTwo · 04/06/2024 21:24

That’s skanky AF.

Sorry OP. I hope you get it fixed.

They shouldn't have assured you that, laminate needs an expansion gap!

Ok. So is there an alternative to Scotia?

OP posts:
TheOneWithUnagi · 05/06/2024 06:25

Only what others have suggested, ie fitting under cabinets. Other types of flooring eg vinyl can be laid flush. Definitely get them back and complain though if that's what they told you, it's up to them to fix it!
