Prior approval - immediate neighbours

I can’t find any info on who counts as an immediate neighbour for prior approval. Would a neighbour whose land is adjoining via the boundary at the back of a 20m garden be included? I am only asking to be prepared for managing that relationship.
Other neighbours are attached and lovely and supportive.

What type of works? As far as I know you don’t need approval from people at the end of your garden for most things

The legislation terms it as 'adjoining'.
It would be any property that shares a common boundary with your property.

Single story extension, that squares off the existing footprint. Just outside the permitted development rules but we need those extra 4m2 to make the space work

Thank you, this means our LA will contact them which is fine, I just want to be aware of how this will play out so I can be prepared. They have form for bullying behaviour and I don’t really don’t want to speak to them unless I have to.

Just to add, I do know that they won’t have grounds to object. But based on previous experiences they will start sending me messages soon.

the last few years seems that less local property is notified than previously.
If it’s an important issue to you why don’t you ring the planning dept of your council and with your given address and post code ask them who is likely to be notified ?
( obviously don’t ask about specific properties )
If the planning has already gone in there should be a list of properties that have been notified on the website

If it outside permitted development and going through planning permission then they can send message to the council. Not you. Block their number if they’re horrible.

We didn't ever get advised on planning adjacent to the boundary of our land because it was a different postcode. They used to do it by map, but I think now by postcode so computerised it,

Prior approval is from the planning department, it has nothing to do with your neighbours. They may get informed by letter or not, and a notice has to go up in front of your property. If your neighbours object, then they write to the planning department within the deadline, they shouldn't contact you directly.
I wouldn't be concerned about people to the rear. If your immediate neighbours (to either side) are on board that's fine. Anyone can only object for planning reasons, nothing else.
