How much extra would you pay to be able to walk to work?

If you could avoid the bus/tube to work, how much extra would you pay in rent per month?

For a couple is it worth £200 a month above and beyond the money saved from no tube fares?

I guess it depends how much the fares would be and how long it would take? It is lovely to be able to walk in though.

Sorry, just re-read your post. How long is the journey?

SonicTheHodgeheg · 02/06/2024 15:00

Do you take public transport during rush hour ? How many changes ? How long is the journey?

IsadoraQuagmire · 02/06/2024 15:14

Yes, definitely. At least in London it is, public transport is disgusting.

Slightly different, but we've just paid 150k for an extra bedroom and the ability for the kids to walk to secondary school. Zero cost benifit, as the bus was free, but massive social, time and ability to attend after-school activities. Well, technically its costing me £10 more petrol a week to drive to work.

Do you have £200 a month? How much time would it give you?

Phl · 02/06/2024 21:11

It would save me 20 minutes travel time, each way. So 40 minutes a day. So over three hours a week.

I mostly walked to work for 13 years whilst ds's at primary etc. was fabulous. I rate it highly.

You may not always be in the same job though so couldn't rely on your circumstances remaining the same.

I can and so can DH when we are at our main base offices, it's great, we can also cycle the long way along the beach path, it also means no need for breakfast club etc and fewer after school club hours. We moved here first though and moved base offices over the years. I wouldn't just think about the money saved but also the time and how much that is worth to you, it didn't matter as much to me before I had ds, I quite liked to read or watch things on my commute.

20 minutes each way isn't much of a commute tbh it takes me that to walk

If you put that into time, per month, for two people, even at minimum wage, that is a smidgen under £300

So you are paying £200 extra, to save £300 of your time if you work in a min wage job. If your time is more valuable, then you are saving more in notional money.

DH and I walk to work in London and I place a high value on it. Not sure how it would work out in terms of rental cost as we have a mortgage. I consider it to have a value above the cost saving of transport though. There's a stressful feeling to rush hour public transport, and it's good for my well-being to be able to avoid that. I like the certainty of knowing I can get to work in a certain time and nothing unexpected is going to change that, and it's also good to travel actively.

It's also nice to live more centrally in general and have easy access to amenities and leisure activities, and I put a higher value on that than on having a bigger house further out. That's assuming your workplace is in a central location of course.

Starlightstarbright3 · 02/06/2024 23:28

I think the commute in terms of time is more relevant . If it takes 30 minutes to walk and 30 minutes to drive no difference . I quite like my commute tbh . It’s me time

True but OP is renting so if their job changed in future they could rent a different property.
