Is renting a two bedroom flat a luxury for two people?

Is a couple renting a two bed flat a luxury and a waste of money? Considering that the extra room would cost a lot of money.

One person works from home

I think it’s essential if one works from home.

Hardly! I rented a 2 bedroom flat on my own because I wanted the extra space and a spare bedroom for guests to stay in.

pizzaHeart · 02/06/2024 09:05

Do they have enough money for this ?

TribeofFfive · 02/06/2024 09:06

Not at all, no. Especially not if 1 is working from home.

People can live wherever they want, as long as they can afford it! DH and I both WFH most of the time and we have a 4bed house so we can each have an office and also have a spare room. It’s nobody else’s business but ours how we choose to have our home.

Eminybob · 02/06/2024 09:09

If it's affordable it sounds very sensible. I wish I had an extra bedroom to use as a home office and a guest room. It would improve my quality of life significantly.

Depends where you are surely? In our city the one bed flats are mostly in the prime city locations and are lovely apartments. They cost about double the price of a 3-bed house in the suburbs per month. We rented a 3-bed because it was much cheaper even when there were just two of us. Don't understand why it would be a luxury. They're just rooms we didn't use.

Long term renting - the extra space will be useful

Saving to buy - go as cheap as possible and save the difference

It probably depends on the nature of the job, but I work in a corner of our lounge-dining-kitchen area, rather than having a separate room. It’s not always essential to have a separate office to work in.

Odd way of looking at it. Just because you could cope in a 1 bed doesn’t mean it’s luxurious to have an office for WFH. Surely it’s just about balancing affordability with long term financial goals and your immediate needs?

I rent a two bedroom flat for one person! I like to have the extra space.

This. If you are saving to buy and the extra rent will make that more difficult in the short term then I’d make do. If you will be renting for ages and it’s affordable then get the nicest place you can on your budget.

I'd agree with others, it sounds like you need 2 bedrooms if one is working from home.

elliejjtiny · 02/06/2024 11:16

Luxury, yes. Waste of money, no. We were in a 3 bed just me and dh for a while. It was cheap because it was old and in a rubbish area. Took a lot longer to Hoover than our previous 1 bed flat did. And we needed the space later on when ds1 and then ds2 came along.

BingoMarieHeeler · 02/06/2024 11:18

Definitely not. Strange idea. I know many couples living in your average house, doesn’t cross my mind that that’s a luxury. 2 people in a mansion would be luxury but since when was luxury a bad thing?
