Cost of replacing TV aerial

My dull job of the day is getting someone to fix our TV aerial issue. We started losing channels a few weeks ago and getting dodgy reception. I pulled the aerial out of the back of the TV yesterday and water came out. So I think we'll need to replace it.

Has anyone had a new one fitted recently and knows what sort of figure I might be looking at?

If you have HDMI slots in the back of your tv, you can get a small indoor aerial.

I got one from Argos as the aerial point was too far away. I think it cost £20 and is unobtrusive.
Perfect picture too!

Water in the TV seems really dangerous. I hope you've turned it off disconnected from the mains and tried to dry it out.

Is it the usual roof top aerial? You might be able to put one in the loft yourself, might be quite expensive getting one on the roof depending on the access.

Is it the cable you're replacing? Or the full aerial with cable?
Have you checked the tv doesn't need a manual channel refresh?

It should be pretty easy to do. My grandad had fitted his outside aerial himself years ago so the hard bit was already done and when it started losing signal/dropping channels I would do all the boring tv stuff first like re-installing the db radio and tv channels, checking connections and when that didn't work I did one time replace the cable. I just cut off the old connection that plugged into the back and wired it into the new cable with pliers

I would be looking for an electrician and a new TV before I bothered and the ariel. You don't seem concerned about having water in the electrics or where it came from?

Tupster · 30/05/2024 14:36

Off the top of my head I think it was £140 for a brand new ariel (fully-fitted where one had never been before) a couple of years ago. Certainly wasn't more than that.

Thanks for the replies. I am bothered by the water in the TV and haven't used it since, hence why I want to replace the aerial. But seeing as the water was just in the aerial socket with no issues with the TV itself (playing firestick and dvds fine), and many attempts at retuning produced similar results, and a bit of googling showed that water ingress can happen if there is damage to the aerial/cable I have come to the conclusion that that is the issue and want to get an aerial company to look at it but don't want to be ripped off with the cost.

@clockdoc why would I get a new TV and plug it into an aerial that is letting water in and ruin that one too?!

Thanks @Tupster for the rough figure.

Sorry I thought when you said you pulled the aerial out of the back of the TV and water came out that you were talking about the TV. My mistake.
