Neighbour spilt fuel

I came downstairs on Sunday and could smell what I assumed was gas, so I panicked, turned the gas off and called the emergency gas man out. He said he could certainly smell something, but checked everything and no gas leak. He wondered if it was the drains so checked those, then noticed my neighbours had an empty gas canister in their back garden so said he would go and check with them re the smell.

They admitted to him they'd spilled a small amount of petrol in the front garden. So he advised me to air the house out and should be alright. It was alright until that evening, then the smell came back. Same yesterday, fine all day, then late at night the smell of petrol returned.

I spoke to another neighbour who is nice, and he said he thinks they use red diesel next door. I'm worried about us breathing these fumes in (although it's been like this for two days now...) and this particular neighbour isn't friendly at all, and I'm concerned about repercussions if I go and speak to them.

I assumed it would've evaporated by now 😞 any ideas of what I could do, or who I could speak to? Its been raining here, so I doubt they could even clean it up properly by now if it was diesel. I don't necessarily want to report them about the red diesel usage (I've not seen them do this myself anyway) because they know some 'iffy' people and I'm here on my own with my son. If I report this to anyone, they'll know it was me. I keep hoping every day that the smell will just go.

I can only smell it in the downstairs cupboard where the gas meter is and sometimes the hallway outside the kitchen. It’s so strange. God knows how much of it or where they actually spilled it 😢 I’m wondering if the gas man had to report that it was a fuel spillage and to who as well.

My mouth has felt sore lately and I’m not sure if I’m going mad or if there might be any link or if I’m just highly anxious.

Diesel is a super effective weedkiller. I don't think its technically allowed though. Is it possible that's what they have been doing ? The smell would likley hang around for quite a while - days probably. Running red diesel in a car it doesn't smell any different or stronger than normal diesel.

Our garage stunk of petrol for three weeks whilst we let petrol from the mower evaporate in some turkey trays.

Might it be that simple?
