Garage Conversion

We have a detached garage and are considering splitting it (60/40) and making the smaller portion an office space. It already has power but would need damp proofed, insulated, etc. Wondering if anyone has done something similar? How long did it take and what did it cost? I realise every job is different, just interested in other peoples experiences. Thanks.

WE have literally just completing this. Was doing the decorating over the Bank Holz!

Similar situation, detached garage. Split 60/40. The 60 being the office in our case. We also replaced the rotting wooden window with new PVC ones.
Cost us a total of £4k.
Including all material. ( but we had flooring left over from the house) We still need to do some brick pointing externally. We didn’t realise til the work commenced. So that’s still to do.

But in terms of duration it was about 6 Days work in total. To do the flooring, partition, walls and ceiling including insulation. We also got extra sockets put in for the office ( 3 x double sockets) and separate light switch for both half’s of the garage now too.

We had a few quotes done. And was mainly about £5.5-6k. We are based in the south east. Not sure if that plays any part in quotes. But The only reason ours was lower, is the builder we used is a mate. And I helped out for 2 days’ worth of labour.

The only extra bits of advice to give would be 1) Get any pointing and damproofness done early on. 2) Use plenty insulation all over – ceiling, walls, floor. For us proof will be come winter time –eek. Wish us luck 3) Before we started the work there was a lot of concern on the whole planning permission and if required. Council were not helpful, they said its for us to decide essentially. And we concluded no! As the garage is brick and was under 30m2.

Now to furnish the room and put in a wifi booster! Hope this helps a bit.

Just to clarify, we didn’t plaster the wall. Just used plasterboard alongside tape and joint method. And painted after.

So essentially, new windows, plasterboarding of walls, partition, and ceiling. With insulation behind it all. New sockets. New light controls and light in each half of garage, laminate flooring ( prob still use a rug too)

Sorry @Charcol i've just noticed your reply. Thanks very much, that's really helpful! We don't currently have NY windows in our garage so would need to put one in along with an external door. I was expecting in the region of £10k which sounds doable going by your quotes. I'm also pleasantly surprised that it took under a week for the bulk of the work to be completed. Thanks again, I really appreciate your response.
