Worcester Park area

Thinking about this area. I'm just wondering what the best back up options are if the trains into Waterloo are messed up, and how often problems tend to occur, if anyone can shed any light on this?

Can you get to carshalton beaches and go to Victoria instead?

That looks quite long winded (40+ minutes by bus before you get on a train) but I guess it's an option.

You could cut through the Hamptons to Lower Morden and get a bus to Morden. Or you could pick up the 93 from North Cheam which also goes to Morden (Northern Line).

Or any stations on that line so you go to Victoria not Waterloo.

I didn’t realise it was 40 minutes… I knew the bus to Worcester park stopped near there and it never felt far but I was about 8 years old visiting my granny so I’m guessing routes have changed.

Friend lives here and sometimes gets bus to Morden but trains seem reliable. Certainly better than Southern services!

Going to Cheam to get to Victoria would be quicker than going to Carshalton .

I've just moved out because of the traffic and lack of transport. When it works, it's fine but when it doesn't (which is quite frequently), it's a nightmare and can take 30 mins to get on to A3. If you're planning on moving there, avoid the roads around the high street and look closer to Malden Manor. There's more access to buses and it's much easier to get around from there.

Thanks, good to know. What additional bus options are around there? I would have thought it would be good to be close to the high street for access to buses, or particularly towards the south end for the bus connection to Morden.

Where did you move to?

I moved to Malden Manor - it's a mile down the road. It's mostly being closer to the A3 that makes the difference and the traffic is much better.

There's the 213 and K1 bus route. The trains are only half an hour but from there you can walk to Worcester Park (15 mins) or the bus to New Malden station is 10 minutes. The other alternative is Morden. It's on the Northern Line and is close to Wimbledon so you hardly need a car. I think properties are much cheaper there too.

Worcester Park is much prettier but if you have to leave the house to go to work I would look at the surrounding areas.

Hmmm thank you, lots to think about. I don't really have to leave the house to go to work - my plan would be to go in once a week but this would be optional/flexible so if the trains were buggered on a given day I could just stay at home and swap the day, generally. However, DH might need to be in the centre about once a week on average, without loads of flexibility on timing. So we'd need a reliable/predictable back up option.

If you are travelling once a week, I really can’t see there being much issue tbh.

traffic is bad in most parts of SW London. I have family in New Malden, I’m not sure what extra bus options there are in Malden Manor vs Worcester Park & you would be further from Morden tube I would have thought?

No...I think the recommendation of Malden Manor was perhaps more to do with traffic/driving, as I can't see why the bus situation would be particularly better.

The issue is really more with DH's work - it might only be once a week on average, but he can't really just arrive late as he would be delivering an event/training session etc. We'd just need to know what the worst case scenario looks like on a bad day and what his backup plan would be.

I live in New Malden so nearby, I’d say your back up is bus to Morden, South Wimbledon or Wimbledon (would probably be two buses, certainly you could get the 213 to New Malden and then change to the 131 to Wimbledon or 152 to South Wimbledon). Also the line branches at Raynes Park so if there’s disruption on just the Worcester Park branch, again you could get the bus to New Malden for the trains there.

Alternatively I think can you get to Epsom by bus? There will be trains to Victoria from there.

Pollipops1 · 28/05/2024 20:46

@WasteOfPaint my friend commutes twice a week & doesn’t seem to have too many issues that I’m aware of. I know she used the tube during the rail strikes as I remember her saying she didn’t realise there was a bus to Morden.

Maybe have a play on tfl website?
