Need inspiration for garage to downstairs bedroom conversion

How did you avoid making it look long and thin? And not too dark. Would be for my DS until her leaves home then a guest room and perhaps for elderly parents to stay if needed. Any inspiration gratefully recieved and booked an architect initial appointment for next week. Thanks

We did exactly that. We divided the room into two, a much smaller second room which is used as a utility but our future plan is on en-suite. This prevented the 'bedroom' from being too long and also provides amenities to that room. A window in the front where the garage door was. Works great for us.

Oooh sounds great. We would put an en suite into it and some vekux roof windows for some light. I thought Pinterest would throw up loads of inspiration but not much on there at all. Do you have any pics of it and could send in private chat if you don't want to share widely? But not to worry if you'd prefer not. Can you remember what it cost approximately?

Have you got a floor plan for your house?

SwingVote · 23/05/2024 20:55

Ours is going into a kitchen but the roof already had this and it’s very wow. Everyone comments.

I'd have doors that open into garden for light. Especially if you're building another garage in front.

Also possibly side and/ or skylights.

Also agree with en suite at back to take away the length.

My advice is make sure the en suite has really good drainage. I rented a house with this conversion and the en suite smelled like sewage most of the time- water would just sit in the pipes and it was v unpleasant. Dunno if it was a garage conversion thing or just bad plumbing in that house but I'd make sure the drainage is good,

Excellent floor plan!!

So it is a similar lay out to my old house which is what I wanted to find out.

We made the ‘ensuite’ a Jack and Jill with the existing downstairs loo which worked really well. Could work for you if you’re building a garage there anyway - means you don’t have two toilets really close together and utilise existing plumbing etc.

I would also have doors to the garden rather than windows/skylights. If they’re full width they’ll let loads of light in.

The only thing is about having doors is my DS would be in it for a while and not sure I want him to have his own exit from the house (we have a side gate that leads to the front, but maybe I am being paranoid!!)

Just had to google a Jack and Jill bathroom! So two doors right? Not sure how that would work with the existing loo on my floor plan? Your wisdom would be appreciated!

Oh I see, you can access the loo from the hall and then another door to same loo from the garage? But the loo is quite think and narrow with the toilet against the current external wall, how would that work, we'd need to move the toilet? X

we built above our garage so same space. We made a bedroom and ensuite at the back. We found it hard to fit a double bed in as the width is limited. We put the bed across the room which leaves around 20cm at the end of the bed and then had built in wardrobes. Just something to consider when you think of layout of furniture.

Thanks, I was thinking of having no door at the garden end and just a big window or windows and a double bed across the end?

Yes - you access it both ways.

It does depend on size of rooms but we just had to ‘turn’ the toilet rather than move and replumb it and then we had a shower cubicle at the other end and the two doors.

Like I said it meant that we didn’t have two loos basically back to back with a wall in the middle which seemed pointless to me…
